Commercial Description:
Created by Don Oliver, California. Don says that the blend of distinctive malts in his brew "offers a rich and malty taste that doesn’t overpower. It’s a full-bodied, heavy ale good for a winter night by the fire."

Perhaps the bottle was not taken care of over the weekend in Chicago. Big head. Robust red colour. Thin but dark malt aroma. Maple syrup. molasses, treacle and burnt toffee.

molasses, malt aroma. Pours a ruby brown, nice head. Mostly sweet malt, alcohol and a heavy toffee finish. If you’re into toffee this one’s for you.

If you love alcohol, then you’ll love this beer. It has way to much alcohol taste which dominates the beer. Tastes like Budweiser mixed with Moonshine. A definite drain pourer. I hate this beer.

Geez, a wolf in sheeps clothing! Not a really complex drop, dominated by smooth rounded malt characters, chocolate and caramel mainly. Thick body hides the fact that this beer really packs a punch. Interesting to see if this responds well to cellaring...

12oz.Bottle $7.19 Longshot 6-Pack Herman’s Longshot Old Ale poured garnet into my snifter with mahogany highlights when held to the light. Tiny slow rising carbonation rises to the small skim of a head. The body is crystal clear when some light manages to shine through. Leaves spotty lacing. This beer looks powerful. First up in the smell is a strong nuttiness along with a handful of dark fruits. Prunes, dark plums(I know these are plums too), and figs. I even pick up cherry cordials and molasses. The fruit aromas are seriously heavy. There’s a very deep caramel maltiness. Flavors are much the same as the smell. The same fruits are present but aren’t near as potent as the smell. The caramel starts, continues and ends deep thoughout. Molasses and brown sugar also make strong showings. Alcohol fumes rise on the swallow. I seem to pick up a tiny amount of oxidation, probably from the malts, but I doubt it is since this bottle is fresh. It adds good character. This is definately enjoyable. The body is on the heavier side of medium with a nice warming alcohol effect. Smooth and sluggish in the mouth. Very nicely done. For such a heavy flavored beer this is actually an easy sipper. By no means can it be drank one after the other but I would be able to sip on this beer for awhile. This is my favorite of the Longshot series. Well made with a lot of very good flavor. Perfect for such a cold and windy noight like tonight. 3/3/07

Big Scotch ale aroma, slightly sour. Rich dark ruddy brown, big head, so-so label. Sweet, woody, boozy, lots of malt, bitter. Medium-heavy mouth. Long alcohol bitter finish. Good. Thanks to PorterPounder.

Pours a deep, clear, coppered/mahogany body beneath a creamy and lasting sand-colored head. mild, dusty English hops in the nose with a dominant malt base characterized by caramel, soy, red grapes and prune. A little cloying to start, but hops surface quickly in efforts to temper the sweetness. Flavors are thick enough that it’s hard to believe the 10.6% ABV until it warms, at which point it becomes overbearing. Honey, molasses, grains, dank earth, yeasty fruitiness... diverse, yet I still find it overall thick and cloying. In all, it reminds me of Ridgeway’s Criminally Bad Elf, except in that I don’t like it as much.

This brew is a reddish-brown color with a thin off-white head that has decent retention. Spotty lacing. Malty aroma with a nice dark fruit presence. Medium, smooth body with earthy malt and raisin flavors, with a lightly hopped undertone. Alcohol is well-hidden, but it is there. The finish is malty at first but the hops and alcohol bite begin to sneak through. Solid all around.
