Very deep brown colour with a reddish tint. Quick dissipating head. Bitter ale, but taste of honey and fruit too. Lovely warm finish. I’m going to dedicate this beer to the Ospreys rugby who won the Magners Celtic League this weekend! Zinister (1201), Houston, Texas, USA

Deep brown reddish color with nice frothy tan head that lingers. Fruit nose of bananas, raisins and, yep, figs. Nice malt character as well. Sweet malt taste with bananas, dark fruits and caramel/toffee flavors. Nice finish. ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 10, 2007 Bottle. Deep garnet color with a large ivory colored head. Fruity malt aroma with notes of raisins and figs. Sweet with a creamy, chocolate-like mouth feel, More dark fruits. Very little, if any, hop presence. The taste grows very sharp just before the sweet finish. This is a nice beer. BuffaloBrewed (42), Buffalo, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 10, 2007 This was suprisingly good. The ale poured a dark almost blackish red and had a thick white head. The beer tasted very sweet, but it was not over powering and was well balanced with malts. The texture was incredibly smooth. It is easy to see why this one won. beerbill (1955), Laurel, New York, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 8, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear mahogany with a large, bubbly off-white head. Very nice aroma of caramel and malt. The flavor is also dominated by caramel and malt, but there is also some light bitterness at the finish. Overall moderately sweet but not excessive. There is also a warm alcohol presence at the finish, but it in no way interferes with the flavor of this beer. A very well crafted old ale. Pailhead (2597), Allen Park, Michigan, USA

Bottle: The aroma has strong notes of berries with cotton candy and a hint of toffee. It pours a transparent orangish-brown with a minimal off-white head. The flavor starts with lots of caramel, toffee, and a hitn of chocolate. The finish has some light fruitiness and faint bitterness. Gurst (338), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 7, 2007 Most interesting beer of the three. Malts are rich and sweet, like caramel. Alcohol picks up at the end, but the sweetness still hums on. The alcohol is a distinct part of the taste, but played well. ultraspank (866), Dublin, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 5, 2007 Very curious nose; like nothing I’ve come across in recent memory. Super dried fruit presence combined with toffee & caramel; Don Oliver isn’t fucking around! Pours a dark walnut with garnet highlights. The huge creamy tan head is mostly lasting and leaves fair lace. Wow! What a treat, just a stupendous amount of complexity. Huge malty front with no acidity, but a warm alcohol presence is savored in the middle. The finish is floral and fruity. The full soft body is syrupy and feels slightly cloying at the finish. This longshot contest for home brewers is a brilliant idea; and just another reason to love Boston Brewing.
