Flavor is a little cola like - sweet, syrupy, fruity (prune) and disapointing. Medium body. It does hide alcohol well. LIngering fruity syrup. I’m sure it was a great homebrew that just didn’t translate well. muddyfeet (72), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Mar 6, 2007 Has the appearance of diluted, thinned out molasses. Heavy carbonation rising throughout the glass and a skightly tan head that holds some decent retention. Nose has a slight pepperiness to it and a stronger sweet, maltiness as well.
Flavor conceals the alcohol wonderfully. However, I find it all rather one-dimensional with a strong malt base and not much else. Malts come across as molasses. Just a slight tang from the hops. Not a whole lot much else. Medium, but slick, mouthfeel that seems to thin out as the beer catches up to room temperature. Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 6, 2007 Amber/brown with great lacing. Roasted caramel smoke aroma. Rich and malty with nice smokey notes. Had a weird alcohol finish,but as it warms it becomes more enjoyable. ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 6, 2007 Wow, this is quite the beer, especially coming from Sam Adams. Pours out a brownish / red color with a thick white head on it. Smell is sweet and full of sugar and maybe some roasted notes. Taste is sweet and almost fruity. Alcohol is hidden very well. A great effort from Sam Adams, and it would be great if the guy that came up with this could take over Jim Koch’s job as head brewer. Great stuff, this is. jimhilt (1688), Bow, New Hampshire, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 6, 2007 Pours a four finger light brown head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Nice clear deep mahogany color. Light carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Molasses nose. Flavor is sweet molasses/caramel, not cloying, high ABV is hidden. $7.49 6-pak, 12oz bottle from Capital Convenience Concord, NH. RCL (1486), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 5, 2007 Strong aroma of sweet dried strawberries and not quite burnt sugar. Malt bomb flavor. This is good drinking on a cold ass winter night. A touch more hops wouldn’t have hurt it though. I didn’t notice the high ABV until it started warming up my insides. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 5, 2007 Dark ruby/brown color, small off white head that had a good hang time then faded slowly to leave a decent lace behind. The aroma was dried fruit and malty with a decent sweet side coming through as well as a bit of maybe caramel.Very smooth brew, fruity sweet upfront with a nice malty side coming through very very nicely. Some notes of dried fruit and toffee or caramel,as well as a nice alcohol/hop bite in the end.By far the better brew of the trio IMO.It would be nice if this was bottle conditioned to age one for awhile and see how it comes out.Oh well......gotta say that this would be a nice addition to there brews. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 5, 2007 The aroma was fruity and malty with a strong presence of caramel and a light presence of chocolate. The fruits present were mostly raisins with just a hint of prune. Phenols from alcohol tickled the nasal passages. The amber beer was crystal clear and had a tannish head which lasted well enough despite the alcohol to lace the glass. The flavor was malty with a fruity chocolate character and a biscuity/toasty presence. The fruit in the flavor was dark and mostly raisins. As the beer warmed a bit of molasses emerged in the flavor. Alcohol was also present. The body was full, and not quite viscous. Alcohol was evident in the warming after consumption and the finish was dry with lasting impressions of fruit and malt with a toasty bit of biscuit thrown in for good measure. A nice old ale. 12 ounce bottle.
