Commercial Description:
Created by Don Oliver, California. Don says that the blend of distinctive malts in his brew "offers a rich and malty taste that doesn’t overpower. It’s a full-bodied, heavy ale good for a winter night by the fire."

Red and mahogany sort of brown color. Has firm heading of foam that sticks its ground. Aroma is a sweet delivery of malt and light note of caramel? The drink is heavy and has very up front flavor of the malt used and will also display some light hopping, however, wonderfully balanced. Sam Adams finally made an old ale thanks to Don Oliver. Mighty fine ale here Don.

Draft. Poured clear dark reddish brown color with full light brown head that diminished slowly with good lacing. Moderate aroma of caramel, nuts and troasted malt. medium to full body with sticky texture. Medium sweet balanced flavor with a medium sweet finish of long duration. My expectations were met.

Pours a clear reddish/brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is caramel and roasted malt. Thick, rich, creamy and sweet with notes of toffee, caramel, maple syrup and butter. Sweetness dominates, yet it isn’t cloying. Mild hop bitterness and no hint that it’s 10.6% ABV. Really a great effort. I’d buy sixes of these for sure. Mr. Koch, add this to the permanent stable!

Pours brown with a thin off white head. Smells of roses and some alcohol with an underlying sugariness. Taste is of roses, molasses and tarte malt.

This is another benchmark beer from the SA LS series. Great ruby mahogany colored pour with 2-finger khaki head. Aroma of caramel malt, brown sugar, cabernet, hops, cobwebby earthy notes. The flavor is caramel malty, with a very rich, complex palate, and some molasses, raisins, dark chocolate, cabernet, and mild hop taste notes. This one is outstanding. Kudos to Don Oliver.

Pours a dark amber color with a tan head. Aroma of dark fruits caramel and malty sweetness. Flavor is brown sugar with rum soaked raisins. Finished warm & slightly bitter a good old ale.

A slight cleanser odor - and no head. But a pretty fine ale. Mr Oliver has done well. Not a brew I’d drink more than 1 per eve though, save this one for the special nights. Beautiful color. I’m surprised a larger brewery could produce this in such quantity... *edit* I thinkk vyvvy got the right idea, I bet this would age to perfection. update: ok, so the aging only went 5 months, because I ran out of beer. But this ale has turned out fantastic. It smells like whiskey (or is it bourbon? or scotch?), and almost tastes like it to. Fantastic. I hope Sam Adams makes this a regular.

Poured a rich mahogany color. I fully expected this beer to have the bitterness generally associated with an ale (at least most high ABV ales), and was pleasantly surprised with the sweetness and maltiness. Seems like the kind of beer that would age well. I may have to go and pick up more of this year’s longshots just to keep a few of these around.
