Aroma was very malty and sweet with quite a bit of spice--roasted and caramel. The taste serves the aroma well--roasted caramel malt. Finish is very smooth. Not too complex, but pretty good and the roasted/smoke flavor is very well done and not too strong.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 28, 2009 Aroma is sweet roasted malts, cinnamon, and some orange peel. Pours a copper orange color with some brown swirls, has a good off-white head and decent lacing. Flavors are similar to the aroma -- definitely malty and less spicy, though. A bit tart with some bitterness on the finish. Overcarbonated, in my opinion. I was expecting a bit more than I got from this beer - I personally would prefer a more bold version, though this is an approachable brew for being a non-American style. I’d prefer the real deal. phaleslu (573), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 28, 2009 12 oz. bottle from the Sam Adams Holiday Sampler pack. Pours a dark amber color with a small tan head. Aroma of dark sweet roasted malts, cinnamon and winter spices, hops, and chocolate. Flavor of dark sweet roasted malts, chocolate, spices, caramel, cherries, and toast. Light-medium bodied, with a ton of carbonation that along with the spices makes for a sharp, biting palate. Not bad. arondee (180), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 27, 2009 The Aroma is sweet and fruity. It mostly smells of cherries and malt. Taste is not overly malty, there is cherry and dark chocolate in the taste but it’s not sweet at all. Overall a little boring. RHeastings (429), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 27, 2009 Easily my favorite beer of the Samuel Adams Holiday Sampler pack. The beer pours a dark amber to medium brown color, with a moderate light tan head in a whiskey snifter. Notes of Crystal 60 and 80 come through in the nose, along with perhaps a touch of CaraStan. As with too many Sam Adams products, the carbonation is a touch too high for the style, and muzzles the full power of the malty palate. Still, caramel and hard toffee flavors are noticeable, along with a subtle but balancing hop bitterness. The finish is semi-sweet but otherwise fairly clean. Overall, a beer that one can give to his non-craft beer addicted friends, and can enjoy himself during the holiday season. Aroma: Strong scents of chocolate and some cinnamon as well
Palate: Creamy and thick and very fizzy with a finish thats not too noteworthy
Flavor: Bittersweet dark chocolate, interesting lingering on the finish, very lightly better. mike67 (88), , New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 24, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark red color with a regular tanned head. The aroma is sweet caramel malt and spice. Medium to full body, quite crisp. Flavors start with spices and herbal hops, continues with sweet caramel malt and some orange fruit, and finish becomes dry with coffee notes. Fairly complex, nice holiday brew. nuplastikk (1227), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Dec 23, 2009 12oz bottle drank out of the much over-hyped Samuel Adams glass. Amber-brown, looks filtered. Soapy head. Sweet, odd aroma..sugary and a touch off in my opinion. Hmm..I must say this beer is pretty shabby, below par. Lots of awkward malt notes, bordering on an Eastern European sugar bomb dark at times...the sweetness is that unappealing and lacking depth. The cinnamon is there, just enough to throw the beer off even more, or maybe it’s the culprit in the first place. Medium bodied, slightly watery, and just all around crappy, I can see why there aren’t six packs of this one. ljay6880 (162), , Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 22, 2009 12 oz bottle served in a clear pint glass. Pour is a deep amber with two fingers of beige head. Nose is very bland; I picked up cinnamon and caramel. Taste is spices and caramel up front, followed by a bitter fruitiness that rides through the finish. This is drinkable, but I am not a huge fan.
