Tap at Night of the Funk. Listen up Sam Adams: this is the best sour you’ve done by far. Normally an American sour shouldn’t go in the Unblended Lambic category here on RB, but this really *is* an unblended lambic. It tastes the part to a tee. Which also means that, like other unblended lambics, it really needs to be blended. It Sam could keep this kind of beer going in different batches over the years they could make a killer gueuze — no joke. I’ve not yet tasted another American beer this close to a real unblended lambic. Excellent effort. Other brewers have something to learn from this: time is tantamount to your sour’s success. Far too many brewers try to knock them off in 6 months and it just doesn’t work that way.

Sample at Night of the Funk 2009: Hazy deep copper with a bubbly off white head. The aroma is quite solventy- band aid phenolics, candied cherry and papery oxidation. Slick body with a light mouthfeel. Lots of medicinal and solventy qualities in the flavor. Quite sweet and band aid ridden- no discerning Lambic qualities of funk or dryness. No where near the style’s demands.

(Draught) Pours a cloudy burnt orange body with a small off-white head. Aroma of barnyard, horseblanket, subtle bleu cheese, and grass. Flavor of earth, grass, light acidity, and wood. A bit bland.

Sample at NotF. Pours a fizzy redish color with a small white head. Nose is lightly cheesy and funky. Palate is full and carbonated high. Flavor is light toast and biscuit with a funky cheese residue.
