kappldav123 (998), Markkleeberg, Germany Jul 9, 2008 Big thanks to KAggie97 for the beer. The bottle looks incredible. The beer in the glass is very, very black. Very complex aroma, a little note of coffee and chocolate. Flavor starts almost too strong and alcoholic, goes down like oil. Warming sweet-malty finish. Well done!
bsm80 (100), Massapequa, New York, USA Sep 7, 2008 ’97 vintage; got 2 as a gift and kept 1 bottle next to the wine. Not a traditional beer in any sense. There is no carbonation pours thick, and I mean thick as in motor oil. Flavor is overpowering, but delicious, drink in small portions. Excellent as an after dinner drink. Sweet yet mocha, complex and overpowering. BigBen2120 (558), Gardiner(52 miles from Allagash), Maine, USA Sep 6, 2008 8.45oz blue bottle obtained at the liquor store in Nashua, NH. Vintage not indicated, though from what I can tell it’s 1997 vintage. Pours an opaque dark brown/black body with zero head. Aroma consists of chocolate, caramel, wood, graham cracker, with faint hints of alcohol. Tastes heavenly. Never had a beer that tastes better. Seriously. Initial chocolate and vinous qualities give way to a pronounced and perfect toffee caramel flavor. Amazing. The last flavor lingers in the end, which is quite welcome. Possibly the smoothest slickest mouthfeel I’ve encountered. Rich. No carbonation. The perfect dessert beer. I’m blown away. This beer would pair well with ice cream or a caramel dessert - I see a Triple Bock ice cream float in my future? Absolutely amazing, no doubt about it. I’ll be snagging a few more bottles to drink for special occasions and to see how it ages. Wow, I cannot say enough good things about it! Practically perfect in every way. Appearance: Pours a flat, viscous, almost filthy dark brown body with no head present or even visible carbonation.
Smell: Aroma smelling of chocolate, black Sharpie markers, teriyaki marinade, and a reduction of molasses and Grade ’B’ maple syrup.
Taste: A blend of chicken marinade, ink, sherry, and chocolate, with a huge, growing prune-like fruitiness that’s all at once satisfying and horrific. Tastes of soil-covered molasses and timeworn maple. Warming finish. I will say it’s relatively smooth for 18% ABV.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Zero carbonation. Sticky mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Yeah, there are some good aspects to this beer and just as many bad aspects, but once the alcohol kicks in you don’t really mind it so much. oteyj (333), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Aug 30, 2008 Pours black with zero head and zero carbonation. Aroma is caramel, fig, plum, and soy sauce, with a definite alcohol quality. Flavor is slightly unbalanced in terms of alcohol, and a bit overpowered with a definite soy quality. Sweetness is quite prevalent, and just about cloying. Palate is smooth, but a bit too warming. craftycarl21 (194), South Hero, Vermont, USA Aug 30, 2008 bottle from 1997. pours a jet black with absolutely no head. Aroma is strong of caramel, alcohol, fig and dark fruit, soy, and a woody quality. Flavor is pretty much similar to the aroma, but somewhat salty. Palate is somewhat thin, but not too bad. Above average brew.
