This is not for the rookie beer drinker. I must admit that I though I was somebody who thought had a good taste when it came to stouts. I love Murphy’s and Guiness but this is much more stronger than that. It is very thick and has a very memorable/distinct flavor. I could try and explain how it tastes, but then I’d just be repeating everything that everybody before me said. Just trust me when I say that if you"re not sure about stouts yet, that you skip this one for now. Not for beginners!!!!

Poured a very dark brown almost black with a small off-white head. Aroma of dark roasted malt, coffee, caramel and a bit of hops. Flavor of dark roasted malt and dark roast coffee, raisins and black cherries. A little bitterness balances the flavors. Good mouthfeel makes this a pretty easy drinking imperial stout. Very good.

Bottle as shown. Pours a dark brown almost black with a large frothy tan head. The aroma is a strong roasted malt with coffee and dark chocolate. Decent lacing on the glass. The taste is a burnt malt with a sweet finsh and quite thin for an imperial stout. A very good imperial stout from Sam Smith.

Dark brown with little to no head. Smells of raisins, roasted nuts, chocolate, and coffee. Flavor is balanced but could have been a little more complex. Fantastic and easy drink. Highly recommended.

7/5/08 at the Seattle International Beerfest. Aroma is richly creamy with very fruity molasses. Appearance is very dark brown with a well maintained cream colored head. Flavor is even richer than the aroma, sweet with great roast, dark fruit and molasses. Mouthfeel is full bodied with a medium carb texture. Overall, one of the best I’ve had; amp up the aroma a bit and you may have a perfect Imperial Stout.

RateBeer Rating, Style and Glass: 98, Imperial Stout, Snifter ABV, Volume & Calories: 7 % in 12 fl oz. estimated at 170 C Purchased at: Circle Liquors, Pennington, NJ for $3.50 Aroma: tannins, dark, roasted, chocolate, coffee, nice, inviting. 10 out of 10. Visuals: deep, murky, black, opaque, tan, persistent head, loose lace. 5 out of 5. Taste: deep, roasted, liquor, light bitterness, heavy malt flavors, layered, rich, well crafted. 9 out of 10. Palate: soda, heavy, oily, long, deep, delicious finish. 5 out of 5. Overall: Not quite up there with some other imperials, such as Stone, and not nearly as rich nor deep as something like Mikkeller’s Geek Breakfast, but highly available, and very delicious. I’d have it again in a heartbeat. It’s a great beer, and very well crafted. 18 out of 20.
