Bungalo22 (326), Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA Jul 6, 2008 Poured black with a off brown head. An aroma of chocolate and coffee. On taste it just didn’t seem full bodied and a bit light for an Imperial Stout. It was good but not an upper tier imperial. ndfreak77 (76), USA Jul 5, 2008 poured dark almost black from a bottle, has a nice chocolate flavor with very little aftertaste. timsilvia32 (445), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Jul 4, 2008 English take on the RIS. Black pour, nice head. More chocolately than coffee, nice amount of carbonation. Not as astringent as some imperial stouts. Changed (161), Ithaca, New York, USA Jul 4, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours black with minimal head. After drinking an Anchor Porter, this beer actually seems quiet shallow. Tastes of chocolate, caramel, and coffee, but not to the nice extent of the Steam Porter. Overall, Sam Smith’s seems pretty overrated. Perhaps if it was bottled in a less distinctive bottle, they would be less desired? zappafan99 (462), South Carolina, USA Jul 2, 2008 Aroma, alcohol and raisin in a dank, brown painted room. Tastes like flat paint. Bitter, sweaty and anglophiled. Malt meets angry fish. All Sammy Smith tastes overpriced, and is rated overrated. Grape bubbleyum has more grace and class. "Ashtray in repose. Trashcan on the nose." Square brew. Todeon (314), Sweden Jul 1, 2008 Bottle. Really roasted aroma of coffee and some chocolate. Moutfeel a bit thin but still very nice and smooth. Taste is chocolate and some roasted malt with a burning alcohol finish. afireinside96 (807), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 1, 2008 Rating #300 for me. 355ml brown bottle served in an English pint glass. Pours black with a big creamy brown head. Smells of espresso, chocolate, licorice, and a hint of cereal grains. Deep smooth roasted flavor with some bitterness but not overbearing. Finishes clean and bitter with a bit of booze and chalkiness. Not a very complex example of an RIS but still very good. MrBunn (1521), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 29, 2008 Bottle. Pour is a dark brown with about two fingers of head and aromas of balsamic vinegar and sweet and roasted malt. From the aromas I’m a little apprehensive... but flavor comes through nicely. Loads of chocolate malt with a very full balance across the palate. Very nice, but fairly straight forward for an impy stout.
