donovan1983 (52), Denver, Colorado, USA Nov 1, 2007 Black with a darker tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate some coffee and sweeter malt notes. Nice roasted malt flavour with bitter chocolate and coffee flavours in the mix. Some hop flavouring is noticeable. You can definitely notice the alcohol in this one, both in the aroma and the flavour. Mouthfeel is good, with a little more carbonation than expected and a medium to heavy body. Finish is on the bitter side but then turns a little sweet. Great overall, and I’m glad I chose Samuel Smith to introduce me to imperial stouts since so far I’ve liked every beer of theirs that I’ve tried. albert007 (409), Penobsquis, New Brunswick, Canada Nov 1, 2007 Black with barely discernable ruby highlights. Head is a thin layer of frothy dark-tan bubbles. Aroma is intense dark chocolate, mild coffee notes with some raisiny sweetness and a hint of bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium/heavy and the beer slides over the tongue like the cough medecine I have always dreamt of. Roasty flavor leaves a bitter aftertaste and a warming feeling is brought on by the alcohol of the style. Great ...but I honestly expected more from a 98th percentile beer. BrianHagmeier (257), Coralville, Iowa, USA Oct 28, 2007 Pours a nice creamy brown head with medium retention. A great roasted malt nose and a sweet coffee flavor. I agree with the last rate that it is a strong alcohol smell and flavor but I wonder it that’s just because the flavors are a little mild for a stout? Any way, I thought it was good but a little sweet for my taste. Hudspart (371), Hudsonville, Michigan, USA Oct 27, 2007 Bottle: Very good beer. Pours very dark (black) with a thick head. Aroma is roasted malt and so is flavor. Good beer. Optigon (561), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Oct 24, 2007 Pours black, opaque, with a tan moderate head. Aroma is chocolatey with a lightly quality. Mouth feel is full with a lightly sour flavor. Molasses, chocolate, and coffee come through. Very good. fro2218 (466), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Oct 23, 2007 This is one damn good Imp stout. A lot of thick rich roasted malt and a wonderful sweetness wit just the right amount of hops to bring out the earthy green flavors. ChetLemmons (87), orlando, Florida, USA Oct 22, 2007 great looking beer. dark and creamy head. aroma of chocolates and soy sauce. a little too carbonated to go down perfectly smooth. robust coffee and nut in taste. possibly a bit too malty and tastes too dark for my tastes i am sad to say. its not a bad dark brew, but sadly, it looks a lot better than it tastes. i was a little disappointed with this was as i was expecting a lot, a bit too much maybe. gripweed57 (19), Hamilton Square, New Jersey, USA Oct 22, 2007 Samuel Smith brewers make great beer! Now that we agree on that point, let’s get to this delicious brew. The enticingly dark brown liquid pours a thick, rocky tan head that leaves a wonderful clinging Belgian lace. The complex fragrant roasted malt aroma hints at licorice, smoke and espresso. A first sip brings with it a sharp bittersweet roasted malt flavor that surrounds the senses. Hints of chocolate, dried fruit and smoked malt come to mind. There is a noticeably bitter hop prescence here as well. The flavor stays long on the palate and finishes dry. This is a very complex and unique interpretation of a classic style.
