black with good tan head, slightly alcoholic but quickly disipates to reveal lots of fruity plum aroma, big body, rich chocolate flavor, hint of bitterness in the finish, too sweet, like it’s not completely fermented

chadcs (76), Westminster, South Carolina, USA Aug 31, 2007 Bottle - Moderate Chocolate / Coffee aroma with a hint of soy. Dark as Dark could be, Light will not penetrate through this thing. A nice smooth sweet flavor with just a hint of bitterness that doesn’t overpower. This has renewed my interest in Imperial Stouts. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Aug 31, 2007 Bottle. A straight ahead example of what a good strong stout should be. Nothing too flashy with the standard mild flavored coffee aroma, near black color with a thin but long lasting tan head. Tastes like a stout should, coffee, hints of hops giving it some bitter complexities, and a nutty finish in the mouth. It doesn’t blow me away in any particular way, but it’s so well balanced and easy to drink that I’m sure I’ll be getting this again. Good stuff from a good brewer. rugbydude05 (280), Kew Gardens, New York, USA Aug 29, 2007 Bottle. Pours a coffee-like color with medium head. Semi-sweet aroma. The beer sits well on the palate but has a rather awkward body. I agree with the comment preceding me that the imperial alcohol bite is a bit too overpowering but overall a solid choice. Icommonsewer (122), TUCSON, Arizona, USA Aug 29, 2007 this is a good non-US imperial stout. The biggest thing that keeps Samuel Smith imperial from rating higher in our book is too much imperial alcohol bite that is displeasing to our palates and generally keeps us away from imperials DarkMagus (433), San Jose, California, USA Aug 28, 2007 Pours a dark blackish brown color with ample fizzy light brown head. Pungent aroma of dark roasted grains, some woodiness, bitter hops, molasses, and a hint of dark dried fruits. Maybe a hint of alcohol in the aroma. The flavors were very fruity...a bit sour and citrusy... and had a lot of the dark roasted/burnt grain character. There was a fair amount of bitter hoppiness, some molasses, and a bit of the alcohol. Sort of a strange mixture of flavors, not really what I expected. Very very astringent finish...to the point of being a bit strange. Certainly not my favorite Imperial Stout. DownsouthGav (602), Greater London, England Aug 28, 2007 Updated: Jan 3, 2008Re-rate 3/01/2008 - Chocolate, coffee, molassess and cream nose. Dark brown beer with a beige head. Smooth, creamy, hoppy taste with some cloying and carbonation.
28/08/2007 - Pours smooth, thick and creamy. Lacks the slik texture of the S.S. Oatmeal Stout. Pitch dark, raisins, chocolate and molasses dominate. A fine stout if ever there was one. 4 llcooldave (309), San Antonio, Texas, USA Aug 24, 2007 Color is black like used motor oil and poured a nice brown cola-like head with extensive lacing. Aroma is that of dark chocolate. Flavor is a nice roasted coffee bitterness with a light sweet component. Very nice Imp Stout. The English know what they are doing.
