KM (218), Tromsø, Norway Aug 16, 2007 Bottle. All black body. Medium sized pale brown lasting head. Heavy aroma of malt and a sweetness like brown sugar. But also fresh, and a hint of banana. Medium sweet flavour. Quite heavy, both because of the alcohol and the sweet syrupy flavour. Dry finish. Quite low carbonation, which also makes it very heavy. It was very good after the first sips, but when the glass was almost empty, I didn’t have the urge to open another bottle. (Tromsø, 09.08.07) almosi (279), Viña del Mar, Chile Aug 16, 2007 Has a color mahogany darkly, very well. A dark and abundant head. The aroma is strong and intense, with notes of chocolate, coffee and pines. The flavor is a very subtle malty, with something of roasted coffee, but where it predominates over the bitter chocolate, and a slight sweet in the fund. It is very carbonic. A good beer. joohefner (380), Isla Vista, California, USA Aug 15, 2007 black with a brown tone and a small brown head. very nice lacing and bubbles. chocolate floral aroma, with roast notes. fairly creamy and smooth. roasted chocolate flavor backed up by raisins and spice with a slight acidity to it. very smooth and drinkable. pretty light for an imperial downender (2538), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Aug 13, 2007 Almost black with a moderate but long-lasting head. The aroma was of roasted barley, dark chocolate and floral hops. The flavour had a pleasant ’rum and raisin’ edge to it, with more roasted barley. Smooth to drink - the alcohol was warming without being harsh. craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Aug 11, 2007 Updated: Sep 8, 2007550ml Bottle. Let me start by saying this beer is a bit overrated in percentile on ratebeer. I do not feel that this beer is anywhere close to a 98 percentile. This is barley an imperial stout to begin with. Not as strong in aroma, body or abv as a true imperial stout. Aroma is lacking... basic stuff. I honestly was expecting more from this beer. Pours wonderful as a very dark stout with a good size head that disappears to a thin lacing... but the flavor is a bit to sour. Would not buy again... there are too many other beers out there that I would rather spend my hard earned money on. newshound (20), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Aug 10, 2007 Bottle from Whip-In (South Austin, TX):
Pours dark, dark, dark black-brown with brown cherry foam that clears at the rim to show the tar-ish color. Like any good Imperial Stout from here to ever, it will remind me of Flying Dog’s Gonzo Imperial Stout (the holy grail?). This is somewhat thinner, less dense in volume and intensity. It has a zap even through the darkness. Swirls into a nice cover foam. As it warms, takes on a soy/salty aroma & taste. It expands bouquet-wise but doesn’t quench as it does while chilled. A hoppy smoke flavor arises when it warms. Drink Imperial Stouts and feel like a king! RaphaelN (195), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Aug 10, 2007 Bottle thanks to HogTownHarry. Pitch dark pour with a good tan-brown head retention. Smell is dominantly of roasted malt, coffee and some chocolate. Thick mouthfeel. Taste is very malty at the mouth with lots of coffee, chocolate and smoke. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Leaves a pleasing bitter aftertaste on the mouth. Wonderful brew as expected. mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Aug 8, 2007 great taste, sweet and thick with a slight coffee taste. another great samuel smith’s beer.
