Bottle. Pours deep brown with a large head. Good lacing. Tastes of molasses, dark fruit and liquorice. Unique pruny taste. Finishes with plum sourness. Nice.

This is another good beer from Samuel Smith. Appeared almost black with some brown/mahogany shades...a nice head which dissipated rather quickly, but left a nice lacing on the glass. In fact, it felt like it left a lacing in my mouth...nice. Full bodied, complex taste. Could definitely taste bitter chocolate and coffee in there. The bitterness wasn’t bad, though. I coulda polished off a few of these, but I only had one (boo!). I prefered the Oatmeal Stout to this, but this is a fine beer as well.

355 ml bottle. Nice black pour with an immediate scent of burnt chocolate. Not a lot of head but what there is lingers. A heavy mouth feel but not a creamy one. I wasn’t as impressed as other raters but it was well above average.

Pours a motor oil brown with a thin beige head. The aroma is somewhat standard, but good, a little weak, most noticeable black licorice which seems to be the going theme with this beer, which is fine by me cuz I happen to love black licorice. The flavour is big on that fact, black licorice is prominent from begging to end, with notes of chocolate, and roasted malts as a base line. A nice warm mouth feeling, the flavours rest on your tongue until the next sip. Really friggin fantastic stuff.

small tan head, very dark coffee black body, smells of barley, chocolate, coffee, and malt. The Flavor is carmelized malt, chocolate, smokey burnt barley. The finish is slightly bitter, full body smooth mouth feel.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark tan with 1.5 cm tan head that is mostly diminishing head. Aroma is sweet with caramel dominating. Initial flavor is sweet, almost cola-like and ends with the warmth of alcohol and slightly bitter chocolate finish. Medium body with light carbonation and lasting after taste. Very drinkable, especially since it comes in the four pack.

Aroma was fruity, sweet malt, some smoke, and caramel. The color was black with a light brown, frothy head. I could tell how think the stuff was before I even tried it by how slowly the bubbles were meandering to the top. Palate was think, creamy and had low carbonation. The flavor was of sweet roasted malt, caramel, and moderate bitterness at the end. Only a little hop flavor.

Aroma is moderate molasses and raisin plum. Large frothy light brown head that left virtually no lace. Head mostly diminished. Dark amber hue. Flavor is very light sweet and moderate bitters. Average finish. Palate is medium bodied and watery flat. Very disappointing, not worthy of such a high rating.
