| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 31, 2005 Pitch black, thick creamy mocha colored head. Nose was a complex blend of ruby port, chocolate, roasted coffee, molasses, with hints of green raisin and anise. Nice up front port, molasses, raisin and roasty chocolate flavor, all while being followed up with a decent hop bitterness that pulls this together nicely. Lighter side of medium bodied (my only real complaint), soft smooth carbonation, roasty port like finish. Still a classic though... MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 25, 2002 Wow. The granddaddy of imperial stouts, and still a leading contender. Blacker than the ace of spades. Nose is sweet, with notes of figs, fruit, and brandy. Flavor is extremely rich, with the major impression being that of almost straight molasses, but somehow I mean that in a good way. The very definition of what it means to drink a vinous beer, with its richness, smoothness, and strength. Would prefer a bit more carbonation. As it finished, it winds up with just a hint of chocolate for a pleasing end to a lovely experience. A beauty, but Stone and Victory have surpassed this one, as nice as it is. stouby (1939), Holbaek, Denmark

Black with light brown head, fine lacings, mostly diminishing. Aroma heavy malty (brunt, smkoe, licorice) and hoppy. Flavor moderate sweet, heavy bitter, long duration. Medium body, oily, soft carbonated. BillKismet (1938), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Sep 6, 2002 Another imperial stout that fails to impress me. Dark, moderately carbonated body with a thick, foamy chocolate head that was full of large bubbles. Initially, a rather skunky aroma/flavor prevailed until the beer warmed and had a chance to air out. However, the roast seemed malformed, but did develop into a more palatable taste with time. Burnt roast/rust bitterness on the palate. The best part about this beer was the roasted aftertaste. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 6, 2002 My first Imperial Stout. Nice tan head, deep black color. Strong aroma and flavor of English walnuts. Sweetens as it warms up. Nice, but only in moderation and maybe with a piece of chocolate cake. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 2, 2005 Updated: Apr 19, 2007Rerate after giving this a 4.4 (haha). ’Light’ black pour with a moderate head, decent lacing and retention. Aroma is sugar, roast, chocolate, caramel, more sweetish malts. Mouthfeel is very light for the style, I’ve had heavier stouts. Also it’s somewhat astringent. Still somewhat enjoyable as it is fairly unique for the style, but it could be a lot better. Shag (1923), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

The aroma is very chocolatey with some milk and licorice thrown in there. The flavor is somewhat sour with dark chocolate and licorice coming through. This is a nice stout although I still enjoy the Oatmeal Stout better. Good one.
