Pours a dark orange brown--black in the glass--with a creamy one finger fading beige head. Aroma of brown sugar, nuts, molasses, chocolate, sweet toffee. Very sweet. All the aromas are the same in flavor, though coffee and a bit of soy are much more apparent on the tongue. A little bit of grape or cherry tang, I can’t tell which. Still pretty sweet overall, with some bitterness in the finish. Chewy medium to full body with light carbonation, very smooth body. nearbeer (1882), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Opaque black with 3 finger, light brown, lasting head. Aroma is chocolate chip cookie dough with brown sugar. Flavor is initially similar, but dry and balanced with some hops and a tongue tingle. Taste and aftertaste keeps getting more dry, a bit too so for me. Palate is medium-heavy. The SS oatmeal stout is smoother and tastier, but this is a good beer. Strong aroma that hits you with every sip, mixture of sherry and roasted barley. Good flavor complexity, lots of malt, roasted, hints of smokiness and chocolate, slightly dry finish with a little sherry. A true world class ale. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 15, 2005 A celebratory brew, welcoming the blessed service of internet back into my domicile. Pours thinner looking than most imp stouts, but looks just as deep and lucious as any other, with a rich black look, topped with a lacy and sticky ring of tan head. Cherry, plum and light mocha notes. Nice and rich, with swirling roasted notes. A few lingering sherry and alcohol notes. Morphing. Flavor starts crisp and bright, with fruity and bready tones, then moves into a rich dense chocolate, then finishes with a lavashing run of oaken dry coffee notes. Palate fades, leaving something to be wanted. Some Imperial Stout standard flavor runs, things ethereal and not entirely describable. Strikes thin and wafting at times, with some more Sweet Stout notes to it, like a little oaty run and some saltiness. Crosling (1856), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 3, 2004 An exceptionally fine looking ale. Pours black with the faintest hints of drying molten lava just under the head. The head is light tan and dies rather quickly but leaves a nice ring around the Goblet. Some of the lace sticks to the glass while other parts fall back into the head.
The nose is awesome! A definate sweet smokiness shines through. Dark malts topped with melting caramel and chocolate with a tub of I cant Believe it’s not butter thrown it. Absolutely fantastic aroma. I can’t wait to try this.
Very drinkable. Exceptional flavor. Nice sweet chocolate flavor with burnt caramel corn, toffee, roasted coffee, butter, dried plums and alcohol. Poor mouthfeel which set this beer back quite a bit but very drinkable with an nice lingering aftertaste that stays in your mouth minutes after swallowing.
I enjoyed this Imperial but I surely have had some that I enjoyed more. Not a very robust Imperial Stout and a little too sweet. But it was still pretty damn swell!
