Longer lasting head than almost any impy I know. And incredibly balanced. Sure, the American Impys challenge the palate and tastebuds in different ways, some more malty and some hoppier. Nils Oscar is wonderful roastiness with a bit lighter body. But this is a different animal in its refinement. I love it! thornecb (1812), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA

Nice brown head with multi-sized bubbles. Very sweet chocolate malt aroma. Sweet barley and citrus. Palate slick and flat. Bitter long-lasting finish. Lumpy (1802), Carrollton, Texas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Apr 15, 2004 Bottle. Dark pour with a beige head. Nose is complex as all get out with the smell of strong licorice, coffee, and berries. Mouthfeel is strong of carbination. Taste is smokey, malty, and of bitter roasted hops. Finish is slightly astringent and bitter, almost like iced coffee. This is a very complex beer that is not at all unpleasing. I would recommend this as an after meal or dessert beer. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 16, 2004 Beautiful black body with full tan head. Aroma of bitter choolate and roasted coffee and a little anise. Full bodied and creamy but a tad more carbonation than I like in a stout. Flavor was sweet but not cloying, robust and full. Classy stout. lithy (1800), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 19, 2009 Nice dark brown with hints of red and a thick but quickly diminishing tan head. Soapy roasty malt, anise. Taste is lots of bitter burnt malt, nice hoppy finish. Chocolate notes, a great beer that is tame for modern imperial stout standards. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 7, 2008 500ml from Whole Foods, Raleigh (on sale for 3 bucks!). Been a while since I’ve had this, and it’s a refreshing alternative to the ubiquitous roasted-to-infinity assassin stouts. Lustrous dark pour with notes of licorice and molasses, a substantial body and decent head. The woody flavors and molasses really do come through nicely, giving the beer a slightly sticky feel that suits the creamy body quite well. Chewy but still drinkable, and nicely complex. pilsnerrogge (1793), Finspång, Sweden
