Sweet, thick, luscious, but as much as I like their other beers and others tend to love this, it’s just not all coming together for me.

Pours and almost total black with mahogany hues. Smells tart, of chocolate, leather, maybe a little plum. Has no head to speak of. Rich, round, luxurious body. Has a the expected burnt and caramel flavors of a good stout but also a unique candy and sherry finish that I have never found in another. The sour twang has thrown me for years and I have only recently been able to appreciate this ale for what it is. Low in alcohol by current American standards.

Jet black in color, light-coffee colored head. Head dropped rather quickly. Pleasant caramel, malt, and coffee aroma (detectable in that order). Flavor has hints of black licorice, mild hoppyness, coffee, and bittersweet chocolate. Rather dry finish. Most importantly: not skunked! (It's always a crapshoot when buying Samuel Smith brews because of the damn clear bottles. Guess I lucked out this time.) Velvety texture, very smooth. Nice.

Bottle... Poured oil black with a light brown head. Aroma of cereal-like barley grains and a caramel sweetness. Went down very smooth and very robust on the tongue. Delicious flavors of chocolate, malt, and a mild yeasty-ness that went toward some alcohol. Left a resonating cocoa finish. Very delicious.
