Roasted aroma with traces of licorice and chocolate and coffee on the palate. One thing I noticed about this brew compared to other beers of the style is the lack of presence of alcohol (which certainly isn’t a bad thing because the beer is still 7%). One of my standards - if only I could buy this in South Carolina... Shag (1923), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

The aroma is very chocolatey with some milk and licorice thrown in there. The flavor is somewhat sour with dark chocolate and licorice coming through. This is a nice stout although I still enjoy the Oatmeal Stout better. Good one. BBB63 (4271), La Porte, Indiana, USA

Vinous aroma, hints of bittersweet chocolate, molasses, leather, very complex. Surprising fruity undertones on the palate (plum?) and a serious roasted taste. Port like warmness and finished dry, great mouthfeel. Not an "over-the-top" Imperial like some American versions, just a darn good classic. 1more4dessert (231), Upstate, New York, USA

Terrific soft palate, medium body, I like hoppier american Imperials a bit more but this is a winner Dalle (1146), Skørping, Denmark

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 11, 2004 looks absolutely gorgeous with a long-lived tan head on a black body. it would have been more perfect if it were opaque but still a stunning-looking beer. LOTS of roast in the aroma, some hops bitterness, some dark and unsweetened chocolate in there. complex flavor of malt, caramel, chocolate, burnt toast, roasted barley. extremely smooth, leaves the slightest tingle on my tongue with some warming alcoholic notes. very good beer, better than their oatmeal stout. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Mar 2, 2004 Pours with a chocolate milk colored head that lasts a pleasing while and leaves some nice lacing. Looks velvety and smooth like a good cappuccino. The body of this beer is as black as crude oil. This could possibly be the thing that bought old Jed that Beverly hills mansion. I didn't realize until I poured it that the bottle was clear, but somehow it lacked any off flavors. Has a light iced coffee aroma with a hint of English hops. Has a gorgeous flavor profile of roasted malt and coffee beans with a slightly bitter finish. A light traditional stout flavor permeates the body of this beer and a sweet alcohol flavor lingers in the finish. This is a beer that I would definitely like to enjoy again but I really wish there was a canned widget version. verbivore (12), Austin, Texas, USA

Gads, but this is a great beer to look at. But drink it, too! Smells like the coffee roaster, tastes like someone dropped raspberry preserves in the mix. Hang on, I think it's raspberries, but maybe I should drink more.
