Feels great in the mouth, smokey malts, but still dryish ( i DID eat a brownie before though haha). A typical English approach to what is an English style. Round yeast, typical English hops balance. Big, and still subtle. Very nice. The best from this brewery in my opinion. Gr0ve (1409), Oslo, Norway

Nice thick fine-laced medium-sized beige head. Chocolatey cocoa aroma. Notes of toffee. Distinctly roasted and soft burnt flavours. Some sweetness on the tongue that balances the burnt flavours. Full-bodied. Licorice flavours towards the finish. Not really any noticeable hops in there other than way into the background and that which balances the sweetness. Some of the typical Samuel Smith house character can be found, but not as much as in their porter. A very nice imperial stout. mixamatt (427), San Francisco, California, USA

Thick brown head that leaves lines of lace with each sip. Roast malt flavor with sweet chocolate and alcohol overtones. Nice hops in the nose. Overall, a very full and well-balanced beer. rolo99 (29), USA

Lovely aroma of burnt grains, chocolate and dark fruits. Medium smoooth body, just brilliant. Complex taste of dark fruits, roast grains and coffee. Chocolate bitter finish. Very slight alcohol taste present. Still, brilliant beer for #100.
Re-rate: Still absolutely brilliant. Picked up a bit of liquorice in the aroma and flavour this time though. Less alcohol present in finish this time. Less bitterness in finish too. I think i may have served it warmer this time (~15 degrees rather than ~10). irishsnake (353), Oakland, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 2, 2006 beer pours a fairly deep black, with a bit of ruby tinting, and a nice tan head that retains well and leaves good lace. great chocolate/toffee nose manages to be full but mellow out the same time - no sharp notes. smooth complex of roast flavors up front, underpinned by a pleasant roast-caramel note. roast bite in finish dries it out nicely. well-balanced beer is a nice change from some of the acridly roasty and over-hopped versions being inflicted on us by some domestic brewers. nice example of the style.
