Pours a deep black coffee with a dark tan head of tightly packed bubbles. Smells of roasted barley, with hints of coffee, and even fewer hints of sour mash and dried fruit. Flavor is a bomb of malt, alcohol, cocoa, oats, and exspresso. Finish is long, sweet, but gives in to bitter roasted hops. A truly great beer. P-tor44 (886), Anchorage, Alaska, USA

Appearance: dark brown, almost black. Large espresso tanned, creamy head, with loose froth in the centre. Brisk, sparkly with fragmental lacing. 5- Aroma: dried prunes, plum with sweet fruity side on dark roast field, toasted barley, hint of mocha with cream, slight vanilla. 8- Flavour/Palate: full bodied. Heavy filling with creamy texture. Mild roast bitterness, black malts with slight brown malty feel on side. Alcohol well hidden. Great chocolate mocha finish. Alcohol lighter than younger brothers. Complex, very satisfying imperial stout.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 17, 2002 I ended my Sammy Smith boycott when I saw this and the Oatmeal Stout side-by-side on the shelf. i wasn’t disappointed in the least. This is a complex and wonderful creation. Nose of dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, and mild roasted coffee. Flavors are similar and begin with roasted coffee; raisins and other fruits in the middle; culminating in a slightly alcoholic and warming finish and an aftertaste that lasts forever. Slightly cloying. Deep opaque cherrywood color with a medium tan-colored head. Impressive. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 17, 2002 August 01: Thickest brew I’ve ever had; like drinking milk, or.. well, something else thick. Black as night; brown head dies quickly. Very vinous nose, flavor has expected bitterness, coffee and chocolate notes, and some sweetness. Good, but I’ll take McNeills anyday.
Oct 02: Bumping it up a little; palate is certainly close to perfect, smooth and soft, then a hint of bitterness creeps in, then softens again into a gentle warmth, like a bubble bath. Great beer, and one of the more accessible Imperials out there. npdempse (931), St. Petersburg, Florida, USA
