Light roast. Medium body is smooth as silk. Grape toffee/coffee bitters. Chewy chocolate chip cookie. Some pepper. Good carb. Light in alc ABV for an imp, but the flavours and palate is wonderful. And Sam products are almost always very smooth. Stands up well against the stronger of the style. Zinister (1207), Houston, Texas, USA

Sweet taste of coffee, chocolate, and raisens (or black plums). It lingers with you a while so you don’t need another sip immediately, but I think I will anyway. Great stout. lipscomb216 (78), USA

Sick wid it. The bomb. The great rating says it all. Deschutes black butte is probably as good, but this is in a class of its own. thefederalist (227), Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA

The aroma is somewhat standard, but good, a little weak, most noticeable black licorice which seems to be the going theme with this beer, which is fine by me cuz I happen to love black licorice. The flavour is big on that fact, black licorice is prominent from begging to end, with notes of chocolate, and roasted malts as a base line. A nice warm mouth feeling, the flavours rest on your tongue until the next sip. Really friggin fantastic stuff. skoll (149), Traverse City, Michigan, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 18, 2007 poured opaque Black, very little carbonation or foam. Strong aroma that hits you with every sip, mixture of sherry and roasted barley. Good flavor complexity, lots of malt, roasted, hints of smokiness and chocolate, slightly dry finish with a little sherry. A true world class ale. One of my favorite stouts. daknole (3032), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

Aroma contains hints of yeast, soy and chocolate. Drinks pleasantly dry and is full of roasted coffee, dark chocolate in front. A hint of oak flavor to start followed by cream that stays to the end. Finishes dry in the mouth with lingering malt flavor. Very easy to drink.
