Medium sized, initially fizzy head that smoothed out nicely. Froth is a bit thick to lace, so it blotches and coats, but in a nice way. Wonderful smell of cooked bananas and a hint of plum
(now prunes?). This beer is a one thing beer, as in palate and taste combined: very malty intake, hit by a burst of lovely, dry carbonation, followed by a sour and fruity(prunes and oh so mild licorice) sweet. Mouth starts watering immediately after carbonation burst and sour(hops)//sweet flavors kick in. Good alcoholic flavor as it warms up. A bit alcoholic warmed up considering the strengths of the other flavors, but overall very good, dry; not overly flavorful, but good flavors. PattyBoy (302), North Liberty, Iowa, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 24, 2006 550ml bottle. Poured a deep brown color with a small tan head. Aroma was very sweet of chocolate and toastiness of malt and hops. The taste was phenomial... I loved the sweet chocolate taste with vanilla accents and the balance of the barley and hops was perfect. Very nice beer, I love all of Samuel Smith’s and this one was fantastic. haggis03a3 (136), Piedmont, California, USA

The color was black with a light brown, frothy head. I could tell how think the stuff was before I even tried it by how slowly the bubbles were meandering to the top. Palate was think, creamy and had low carbonation. The flavor was of sweet roasted malt, caramel, and moderate bitterness at the end. Only a little hop flavor. FLnative80 (174), Orlando, Florida, USA
