Pours black with frothy tan head that dissipates rather quickly. Smells predominantly of black licorice and deep fruits (raisins and plums come to mind). Overall, the aroma is a bit on the tart, fruity side... maybe a slight hint of chocolate and roasted malts in there, but predominantly black licorice. The taste is similar to the aroma: starts out with fruit and black licorice, then finishes a little more smokey and chocolatey. Malts and alcohol are also in the mix. A pretty complex beer, let it warm up a bit and the notes are easier to distinguish. Beautiful pour and very thick on the tongue; it’s a pretty heavy brew, but still quite drinkable. Samuel Smiths continues to impress!

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 5, 2009 Egészen mély,vöröses barna majdnem fekete szín fölött hamar eltűnik a világosbarna közepes hab, csipkés nyomot hagyva a pohár falán.

Aroma of molasses, licorice and roasted chocolate malts. Taste begins with sweet, smooth molasses and roasted malts then finishes with a bitter chocolate and licorice. Medium body, creamy texture. The medium carbonation matches the beer perfectly. I really enjoyed this one.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 4, 2009 bottle thanks to Treborwhip, pours a thin black with a tall tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, light soy, and noble hops. Nice sweet toasted malt and light roasty flavors mix with some smoke, peat, and again a nice noble hop flavor that ends lingering with notes of soy sauce and coffee. Very drinkable. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 3, 2009 Updated: Dec 5, 2009Smells like nice dark malt and licorice. Lots of it. It looks like your pouring for a stour beer commercial this isn’t Guinesse. Lots of thick brown head and you can’t see ANY light through it at all, not even the edges. I think this is the blackes beer I have ever seen. I bet it will make other things black too... The malt taste is damn near perfect, crisp and distinct like coffee is but its all malt flavour. A bit of licorice towards the end as well, but not as much as in the nose. Quite smooth for how dark it is, I thought it would be thicker. Fantastic, I had thier oatmeal stout the next day to compare, and this one is better, much more robust. waltersrj (33), Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 30, 2009 Decent pour: black with a tiny tan head. Nose is licorice, tobacco, fig, bitter chocolate, and vanilla. Taste is similar but more acidic than expected. Mouthfeel is oily and thick. Decent but I’ve had much better, good for the price though. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 30, 2009 Black color with beautiful creamy and persistent head. Attractive aroma of toasted malt, grape and points of bitter chocolate. Full body. In mouth the taste of coffee predominates, and it makes him appreciate the alcoholic component. The end is long, bitterish and almost salty. A beer that resembles to a liqueur to low gradation. Not proper imperial. LanceUppercut (130), Sweden
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 28, 2009 A nose of tobacco, liquorish and raw coffee. The note of raw coffee continues to dominate i the taste as well, but I can also discern a bit of green apples, cherries, snuff and chocolate. A bit too acidic though. I thought this to be a foreign stout, mainly due to the low alcohol and bitterness. If it really does classify as an IS, it’s not by much.
A typical brit. No experiments and no big sensations in taste, but on the upside it’s well balanced and pretty drinkable. RoscoeJackson (33), Michigan, USA
