Light mailty aroma. Fairly dry with citrusy hops and some caramel malts. Soft mouthfeel with a light tingle. A little watery and a minor disappointment from Samuel Smith. Part of the problem is the confusing name - I thout this was supposed to be an IPA, and it is not. As a bitter it’s better, but they should stable that label. zappafan99 (463), Ascension Island

Aroma: Biscuit, some hops floral and sweetness(malt?). Taste: Light to medium bodied. Refreshing, a little like sweet lemon tea. The finish does hang a while. The initial taste is a little lacking for me. Starts poorly, finishes well. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA

Pleasant, but unremarkable flavor, malts and mild caramel. Hops are very subdued. Rynoplasty (548), Louisville, Kentucky, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 31, 2008 Bottle. Dark orange colour, huge head, persistent. The aroma is hoppy with floral hints. The flavour is very malty with light caramel traces. Good hoppy finish, not really bitter or heavy, but complex. A beer with a very balanced flavour, really pleasant.

Carmel bready malt, minimal hops.
Finish is clean and kind of disappointing.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | Aug 28, 2008 Pours light bronze with a thin head. Smells incredibly bittersweet and malty with only a hint of hops, strange for a beer called an IPA. Bitter maltiness dominates the first sip. Lots of caramel in there also. Very sweet malts here, definitely not an IPA as it lacks any hop punch whatsoever. Really impressive mouthfeel with carbonation that really makes it finish well. Very dry as well. Very dry. Samuel Smith doesn’t disappoint and once again delivers with a super quality beer for the price despite being misnamed- this is an ESB through and through.
