rustychiles (429), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jul 18, 2008 Pours a reddish copper with a soapy head that quickly fades. Aroma of hops and a surprising amount of caramel. Flavor is bitter hops, a little caramel with some earthiness. Finish is bitter hops.
chokmah33 (102), Bremerton, Washington, USA Aug 28, 2008 Crisp citrus hops aroma. Fruity sweet malts.
Carmel bready malt, minimal hops.
Finish is clean and kind of disappointing.
Palate is full and smooth. Underhook (93), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA Aug 28, 2008 Pours light bronze with a thin head. Smells incredibly bittersweet and malty with only a hint of hops, strange for a beer called an IPA. Bitter maltiness dominates the first sip. Lots of caramel in there also. Very sweet malts here, definitely not an IPA as it lacks any hop punch whatsoever. Really impressive mouthfeel with carbonation that really makes it finish well. Very dry as well. Very dry. Samuel Smith doesn’t disappoint and once again delivers with a super quality beer for the price despite being misnamed- this is an ESB through and through. ericandersnavy (107), denton, Texas, USA Aug 28, 2008 bottle from metzlers in denton tx. poured a clear amber/copper with an off-white head that lasted to the last drop. some lacing was noticed. the aroma was pleasant with caramel and some floral notes. flavor was caramel and some hops to give it a little dry bitterness. samuel smith is one of my favorite brewers and this one just didnt do it for me. BelgianBeerGal (890), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Aug 28, 2008 355ml bottle. Really nice and drinkable ESB. The "India" on the label confused me at first though. Poured a bronze colour with a medium off-white head. Very gentla aroma of sweet malt and caramel. Great balance between the malt and just enough hops to hint at bitterness. haggis03a3 (99), Piedmont, California, USA Aug 22, 2008 Copper with a good billowing white head. Sweet ESB malt and bitterness without much hop flavor. A bit too sweet and more of an ESB than an IPA.
