TheDutchman (18), Louisiana, USA Nov 3, 2009 Poured this from a bottle it was a beautiful dark brown with a big beige head. The head went away quickly. Smelled of caramel but the woodsy undertones for me kept me from rating it higher. Great flavor though with caramel chocolate and nutty notes throughout. I thought it tasted better than it smelled. sound67 (157), Offenbach, Germany Oct 30, 2009 355ml bottle, as pictured. Pours a beautiful, clear deep brown colour with a big, creamy beige head, with plenty of retention. Intense aroma of caramel and ripe plums, with dry hops in the background. Medium bodied dark ale, feels stronger than it is, slightly grainy (but not watery) mouth feel. Flavour isn’t really "sweet" at all - coffee notes, some dark chocolate, with a malty finish and mildly sweet after taste. Chocolate notes come to the fore as the beer gets warmer. This is a surprisingly powerful brown ale - heavier than a bitter, a little lighter than a stout. Very refreshing, well balanced, drinking very nicely. Too bad, again, that the only vendor who carries it in Germany charges a premium price for it, €3.49 for a small bottle. Well, next time in England (at the Chandos near the National Portrait Gallery, e.g.) :=))) fredthecat (174), Canada Oct 24, 2009 woody, boozy smell, its light brown with a bubbly head that fades away but laces. taste is a heavy malty sweet, woody caramel that lasts, hops at the end. its smooth and heavy, this is so good strowlands8 (75), Ontario, Canada Oct 23, 2009 Smells earthy, with some hops. Tastes nutty with some hops and caramel and a bit of roasted malt. Flavour is not that big but the taste is good. Elwood (647), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Oct 21, 2009 Serving: 12 oz. bottle.
Appearance: Deep brown color with a foamy, light tan head. The head fades fairly quickly.
Aroma: Nutty and fruity nose with slight wet paper and cardboard notes. I think this one has sat around for a bit.
Flavor: Malty with a touch of that signature English sourness. I can’t see what the fuss is about with this one. A little bit of nuttiness and a mild back bitterness help round things out.
Palate: Medium-low carbonation with a medium-light, water mouthfeel and a short finish.
Overall: It is just okay. NayTron (28), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA Oct 18, 2009 One of my favorite brown ales. Caramel, fruit and hops. Gets better the warmer it gets while drinking. grimreaperguru (11), santee, California, USA Oct 14, 2009 Pours a nice reddish brown color with an off-white head. The aroma is a nutty caramel and some hops.Flavor is sweet caramel, nuts and a little hops with a little hop finish.A must for ale lovers. downender (2528), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Oct 12, 2009 Reddish brown in colour with a big, off-white head. Aroma of red fruit, caramel and earthy hops. Flavour was extremley sweet, with a nasty, boiled sweet edge and nutty finish. Another poor, pasteurised English bottled beer.
