The nose is malt with a touch of butterscotch. The flavor is a little too mild. A nice touch of toffee but it is really light. Finishes clean with just a touch of bitterness. I need more malty characteristics. Tried a second one last night and the flavors were more pronounced. Gotta raise my old score a little bit. cheapdark (2017), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Jan 4, 2008 Not much aroma in the forefront. An iced tea color. Decent below average carbonation, nearly flat. Quite mild on the taste buds. Tries to be bitter but never really gets there. Overall a relatively acceptable ale on my lagaer loving taste buds. Has some imposing personality but it’s well behaved for the most part. elelwarren (138), SF Bay area, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 5/5 | 12/20 | Dec 29, 2007 Bottle shared with wife, who calls this her favorite beer. can’t say the same, but easy, pleasant drinking. Burnt umber pour with lovely head & slight lacing. Aroma of molasses. somewhat watery flavor, with a touch of odd tartness, but mainly caramel flavors, and calmly bitter hops. Nothing challenging, Best element is creamy texture with unobtrusive carbonation. Maverick34 (701), New York, USA

I’ve had this before and finally decided to rate it but really I think I like American style browns better than English style. BrianHagmeier (257), Coralville, Iowa, USA

Nice head and blood red color. It has a coffee and chocolate flavor with a sweet after taste. It was okey-dokey. llbjr77 (72), Largo, Florida, USA

Caramel is present and aftertaste is hoppy and malty. Nice balance. Consistent with Sam Smiths quality. Will drink again! sneagrams3 (1756), St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Nice syrupy-sweet aroma, licorice and roastiness also strongly present. Medium bodied. Flavor is more hopped, still some caramelly sweetness and chocolate in start. Aftertaste turns to hopped one with still some licorice. Surprisingly crispy carbonation. Quality stuff again from SA.
