FishManLA (147), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA May 5, 2008 Pours a medium brown with a medium sized head with fairly long persistence and nice lacing. Nose is an earthy malt. Taste is malty and nutty, but understated. Finish is also understated, mostly of hops. A clean drinkable brew, but not a standout.
oteyj (234), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Jul 7, 2008 Pours reddish brown with two finger frothy head. Aroma mainly of caramel malt. Flavor is a blend of roasted malt with some hop bitterness, but is not overly spectacular or complex. Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side with a bit of astringency. Pretty good for the style, but nothing to jump up and down about. Slipstream (301), USA Jul 7, 2008 Updated: Jul 8, 2008I wanted to pick a winner for my 300th rating! I think it is my Ratebeer one year anniversary as well. A brew from Samuel Smith’s is a good choice, because Yorkshire’s oldest brewery has been at the top of my charts recently. This had a foamy head and a translucent mahogany body. The aroma is pungent and rich - sweet molasses, hops, and some cheesy tang. This has full, complex brown ale flavor, and a medium-light heft. Carob, cola, and a little cheese to start, changing to dry hops for crisp, slightly numbing finish. The aftertaste is mild malt. I can’t think of a better brown ale! I am not sure why I find Samuel Smith’s to be so satisfying - could it be the grains that they use? jeckenroth (41), Charlestown, Massachusetts, USA Jul 6, 2008 Off white almost brown head that was very long lasting. Dark brown and some what opaque in the glass.
Malty nose with just a touch of sweetness.
Nothing about the appearance raised my expectations for the taste but I was pleasantly surprised. The nutty and malty start is robust. Tastes of a touch of hazelnut but strongly malty. The finish was sweet with a touch of citrus. The Watery and low carbonation was indicative of the style.
Quality, but not a style that I am a huge fan of. Would be good with a strong Farmhouse Cheddar from the English country side.
zappafan99 (193), Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA Jul 3, 2008 Brown. No head. Better than most of Sammy’s brews. Sticky. And has traces of that dank taste I don’t like from this brewer. Overrated and overpriced. kevd193213 (293), Coventry, Rhode Island, USA Jul 3, 2008 Bottle. Light brown cloudy pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of raisins, bread and nuts. Taste of caramel, hazelnut and malt. Smooth, slightly sweet finish.
