NPRugby11 (82), New York, USA Jun 9, 2009 Pours similar to a dunkelweisen, dark with a tan head. Had a hint of chocolate on the nose and had a very nice grain taste with a tart finish. This is probably the smoothest beer I’ve ever drank, goes down like it’s not even there. soyorganic (217), Denver, Colorado, USA Jun 8, 2009 Bottle, black color. Aroma of roasted malt with raisin notes. Very smooth taste highly drinkable. Strong dark malt taste with a slightly sweet taste that has raisin undertones. vinerd (17), Orlando, Florida, USA Jun 7, 2009 12oz. Bottle: Aroma is lightly sweet. Smells of roasting, malts, a little cream, and chocolate. Poured black in color with a large, creamy, brown head that lasted throughout. Small lacing. Opaque. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malts, chocolate, oats, and roasting. Very well balanced. Medium, silky body. Soft carbonation. Dryish lightly sweet, lightly bitter, malty-chocolate finish. Overall, a very good sweet stout.
italarican (157), Astoria, New York, USA Jun 7, 2009 Pours a beautiful dark chocolate with a deep beige head. Moderately strong aroma of mocha coffee and some roasted malt. Some great barley flavor with semisweet chocolate. Incredibly smooth and creamy. Although not thick, there’s some decent depth here. This is a good one. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Jun 5, 2009 Bottle. Pours a black body with a tan head. Subtle oats and a nice smooth lightly roast y body that is thin and session able. Overall a nice mass production oatmeal stout. Never a bad choice for a simple oatmeal stout. Cirrhosis (607), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 3, 2009 Dark dark brown, with hints of red showing around the out side of my glass, a brown head that lasted a very long time capped off this beer. The smell was amazing deep roasted malts, chocolate chip cookies, and coffee rise up from my glass, making my mouth drool. Bitter coffee and chocolate malts give the beer the perfect balance of taste a bitterness. The mouth feel is full but maybe a touch chalky but no matter how I see it is amazing. I taste roasted marshmallows in the finish and a bitter dark chocolate after taste is left lingering in your mouth. Simply an a amazing stout, this has restored my faith in stouts that has been dwindling lately. Vertical Bacon Strips (874), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 2, 2009 Can I change the sampled ammount to around a million? I love this beer. Not quite totally black since there is some light penetration that shows an intensly dark cherry hue. Produces decent sized brown head that is fun to watch while it bubbles down. Retains enough cap to cover entire beer for about half the pint and make some solid lacing rings early on only. None of the qualities of this beer are harsh, strong or overwhelming - everything is in perfect balance and leans towards the milder side which is the main reason that it is so easy and enjoyable to drink. Aroma has sweet warm roasted malts and a good blend of coffee first and chocolate second. Defenetly more coffee - but both of those aromas are quite mild which is nice for once. Taste is very well rounded with the obvious roasted malts and coffee flavours that are excellent. Perfect mouthfeel. Incredibaly smooth and thick with the perfect ammount of slight dry tart bitterness. I dream of this beer in a never emptying pint...always slightly warm and always fresh. My favorite stout. Samuel Smith makes excellent beer period. heavy (805), Split, Croatia May 31, 2009 0.55 l bottle my parents brought from London. It poured dark brown body with medium sized fluffy brownish head. Very nice aroma, coffee dominated, caramel, chocolate, some herbal spices. Coffee is dominating the flavor, too. It’s nicely balanced, slightly bitter and sweet, notes of chocolate, caramel, peat. Creamy and full bodied. Sweet finish. Best beer in tonight’s tasting, I may liked it more than Doggythedog did, but we both have too high expectations. Very good anyway, but for sure, not the best around.
