Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Dark pour that lets in a little light. Aroma has several sweet notes but is not overpowering. Taste has the slightest hint of maple but stops at that. Decent and above average.

Clear dark red color, fluffy tan head. Malty, sweet, raissin, chocolate scent. Sweet, dry, bready, cocoa taste. Smooth mouthfeel, low bitterness.

Hey! Who sppiked my Vanilla Coke? This guy is sweet, thick, and dark. Chocalet, nutty, and above all, more vanilla than any beer I have ever had. This bitch kicks ass, definitely the best that Samuel Smith has to Offer

Pours very dark with medium head. Flavor is crisp, goes down smooth. There is a slight bitter aftertaste. (550ml, $4.50)

Pours a pitch black with small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt with hints of sweet fruit. Flavor is nothing unexpected. Pretty smooth with a dry finish. Not a bad stout, but not a great one either.

I had high expectations for this beer, and I’m happy to say that I was completely blown away. The smell is high on yeast with a little citrus, interesting but not too special. The taste is everything. Think breakfast: chocolate mocha (heavy on the coffee), yogurt with granola, and a few blackberries. Each flavor has a constant presence and no component really overwhelms the others. Plus, although a dark stout, it goes down without resistance (which some people might not like). But I really have nothing bad to say: today, I found a new favorite beer.
