Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottle Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Poured dark brown with a dissipating off white head Aroma was roasted malt, dark fruit and a touch of hop. Flavour was slightly sweet with roasted malts n oats. Finished nicely bitter with hints of licorice and bitter sweet chocolate. Would seek out again.

0.355 l bottle. Almost black dark brown color with small head. sweetish and roasty aroma wtih salty licorice and a hint of grass. The flavor is also sweetish and roasty with coffee, salty licorice, toffee and fruity esters. Dryes up to coffeish finish. Rich and fairly full bodied. Tasty but I could not pick any oatmeal character.

This is one fine brew. Very dark stout, and very smooth and rich. Slightly sweet, without a bitter aftertaste. I have had this one several times, but not for a long time. I had forgotten how good it really is. Excellent.

Pours completely black, just a few tiny garnet highlights when held up to a bright light, with a huge fluffy brown head that lasts very nicely. Nose is fairly faint black malts, not much coffee or chocolate, just a lot of barley. It is a tiny bit smoky. Flavour is more smoky than the nose. Not overpoweringly so, just nice. There are a lot of dark malts, and it is pretty sweet. Very creamy and smooth. Excellent beer.

Poured from a 550 bottle. Look was DARK brown, almost black, with a tiny tan head. Aroma of cocoa beans, coffee, caramel malts, dark chocolate bars, and just a little bit of hops. Tasted a lot like it smelled, with a very well balanced sweetness. There was some stale cold coffee, malt, dark chocolate, and a slight bitter hop. The mouthfeel was thick and creamy. dry and chewy. It left a trail of foam/cream down the middle of my tongue all the way down my throat. The mouthfeel was absolutely perfect. Overal a fantastic stout. I could drink this all winter, by the sip, or by the chug.

Thanks to CaryTheDude for this one. Dark pout with big, tan pour. Aroma of CoCoWheats, milk chocolate. Flavor is Dark chocolate and oatmeal. A bit dry finish. For my first Samuel Smith, I dug it.

Black with large long lasting tan head. Unfortunately the appearance is the best thing about this beer. Aroma is faint choco. Taste is light bland bittersweet choco. Not much else to say.
