Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Good solid stout. Mild nose of malty sweetness and a pleasant, milky sweet lift. Palate shows the attractive sweet kick but this dries out relatively quickly through some mild bitterness and astringency. Not sure what the fuss is about here and surprised the beer is a 98%er.

Pours thick black, with a hefty tan head that leaves nice lacing behind. Roasted sweet lactic aroma, with some chocolate. Lightly roasted, similarly milk chocolate sweet flavor. Velvety smooth palate, a very good beer, but it really should be considered a sweet stout.

Coffee like taste--sits on the tongue--slides down smoothly. Great after taste. Splendid Oatmeal Stout. Felt less masculine though after reading up on it, as it was originally produced for lactating mothers ; still would drink it any day.

This beer is balanced really well. The flavors are straight up the middle and represented well. sweet but dry, smoky but bright, smooth but sharp. a touch too much wood and smoke maybe? its really hard to criticize. Setting standards for stout makers.

550mL bottle from my mixed gift pack. Pours what is, by stout standards, a ’light’ colour. Smells very faint of stoutness, I guess. What strikes me the most about this stout is just how sweet it is, I can’t believe it’s not listed as a sweet stout. There’s absolutely NO bitterness. Good thing I like sweeter stouts. Very velvety smooth. Caramel is apparent, mild milk chocolate, coffee, with the most subtle hint of roasted malts, but no detectable bitterness. Almost dry in the aftertaste, but not really. Extremely drinkable and tasty, there just really isn’t much in there. Quite mild, but well done.

Great stout. Pour is jet black small tan head. Nose of soy, leather, roasted almost burnt malt, chocolate, and toffee. Flavor is very rich complex. Light oats, bitter with chocolate, coffee, molasses. Loved it!

Very black pour, like a black hole with just the slightest hint of a tan head reminding us that there’s life out there somewhere. Extremely roasty mouthfeel that warms the palate and the belly as it slides on down. This beer just makes a guy feel loved and at home with the world. Superb.

Pours very dark with a decent tan head. Aroma of roasted malts. Sweet oats, detect a metallic aroma, Taste sharp metallic to a very smooth mouth feel, very slight bitter finish, very smooth, metallic taste kills this one.
