Slipstream (734), USA Sep 15, 2008 Updated: Oct 28, 2008This has another great (and somewhat mysterious) Samuel Smith label. A big, bubbly head and an earthy, molasses-like aroma. This is pretty smooth and hoppy for a stout. I guess the oats add mildness and a light, bready taste. It is a full brew, but still pretty easy and drinkable. There is just the right amount of sweetness, and I could also taste coffee and a touch of prunes. The finish has a hop tingle to it. This is not as awe-inspiring as their imperial, but it is still another winner from an excellent brewer. The aroma is of chocolate with barely no hops. The taste is very similar tothe aroma. Roasted malts with lots of chocolate. Some cereal taste to it as well. Low carbonation with a "milky" feel. The thing that stands out the most is the low hops. Very porter done in a traditional, artesanal way. Aroma is light fig, grainy, carob, subdued but engaging. Taste is not as sweet as I would have expected after tasting the imperial. Dry, oaty, creamy, grainy, lightly roasted. Light hopping, nice (if brief) finish. A bit watery, though. A touch on the thin side, however still nice and creamy with decent carb. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Molasses and coffee on the nose. Very silky mouthfeel - not overblown. It is chocolately, very smooth, and malty. The body is heavy with low carbonation. I really enjoy the smoothness of this stout and the low level of bitterness is a nice change of pace. MrBunn (1521), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 7, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a nice and big foamy head. Aromas are a little fruity with a kind of balsamic/soy edge to it. Flavor has a lot of oats and cocolate with a bit of creaminess to it. Nice stuff.
