Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Pours a very dark color with a nice thick head. Has aromas of sweet roasted malts. The flavor is much the same. It is sweeter than what I had been expecting, though not too sweet. The finish is well balanced and creamy. This is a very nice brew, especially when the leaves change and the cooler crisp air moves in. I really enjoy this beer.

Pours deep dark brown, almost black, with tan head, dissipates quickly. Milky, chocolately aroma with hints of dried cherries and molasses. Tastes creamy and sweet, feels silky and smooth in the mouth. The balance and carbonation are great, and I love the cocoa aftertaste.

Bottle: Pour is medium clear dark with a fizzy yet creamy head. Aroma is of chocolate, light burnt malt, sweet oats, and a lot of malt. Carbonation is spot on making this brew silky to the touch. Flavors began with sweet cocoa, creamy oats, moving to a ton of malt, and finally finishing with a hint of hop and the residual cocoa. Damn good brew. Complex and delicious.

~Pours black with big foamy brown head. ~Roasted malt scent, yet very fruity and with nice chocolate scent. Smells very nice. ~Flavor starts off light and then quickly turns a sweetish sour toasted malt chocolate flavor. ~Smooth and creamy feel. Silky really is a good word for it. Slight tongue tingles as well. This beer feels great. ~ Yet another very good beer from Samuel Smith. The taste is a bit light, but has lots of flavoring which makes it nice to drink. This beer is definitely one I will have to share. I really like Samuel Smith beers. I am glad I decided to give them a try and they are fairly easy to find.

550 mL bottle, pint glass. Pours dark brown, almost black, with an enormous pile of tan suds. Aromas of vanilla and toast. Initially greets the mouth with a seltzer water buzz, then drinks smooth and creamy, very full bodied. Flavors of vanilla and cream, sweet but not overly so. Hints of raspberry in the background. Muted finish. Afterwards, vanilla lingers in the throat, fruit on the lips.

550ml bottle at the Princess Louise, 15th August 2008. Near black with a brown tint. Beige head that leaves good lacing. Nose of oats and cream. Full bodied and creamy with a smooth, roasted malt flavour. Good but not quite excellent.

550 ml. bottle. Pours a lovely dark brown, bit of exuberance in the light tan head initially, then settling down, minimal lacing, nose of malt, cocoa, taste initially malt layers, ending with a bit of mild hop. Very mild sweetmess, good mouth feel. Thoroughly enjoyable on a cloudy rainy day.
