Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

550 ml. bottle. Pours a lovely dark brown, bit of exuberance in the light tan head initially, then settling down, minimal lacing, nose of malt, cocoa, taste initially malt layers, ending with a bit of mild hop. Very mild sweetmess, good mouth feel. Thoroughly enjoyable on a cloudy rainy day.

Pours pretty much black. The aroma is nice, with some sweet candy, grain, malts and chocolate. The taste is smooth, rich, and full of chocolate, oatmeal, and cream. Very well balanced and a nice blend. I like it.

Pours a little lighter brown than, say, Guinness or Beamish. Full palate, very light bitterness...not at much bite as a lot of stouts. Finishes sweet. My uncle recommended this one to me...my respect for him just shot up quite a bit!

Bottle. Pours a dark brown, nearly black, with a thin tan head. Aroma is of oatmeal malt, and a hint of chocolate. Flavor of complex malts, oatmeal, chocolate, with a strong bitterness. Mouthfeel is creamy, with excellent body. Very good beer, much better than I remembered it.

Small bottle, pours black with a creamy tan head, dark roasted malt, hint of burnt malt, chocolate, licorice in the background, some vanilla cream aroma (from oatmeal?), flavor of roasted malt, dark chocolate, some bitterness from roasted malt, mouth feel is thin, does not have more mouth feel (oomph!) then your typical lager, I was expecting abit more of it like I had gotten in some other stouts, a good tasty stout but this could use a bit more mouth feel.

Dark brown in color. Rich aroma of malts an chocolate. Smooth taste of malts, nuts, chocolate, and oats. A bit carbonated for a stout but still a fantastic treat for me.

this is a strange one to rate for me. it’s one of the first "good" beers I was ever into. and I also spent some quality time with it while traveling abroad. I’ve had it many a times, but... haven’t tried in a couple years and didn’t know if it would stand up to my current snobby tastes. well, it does. in fact, I’m kicking myself for not drinking this more often. it’s one of the better stouts I’ve had. for the rating: bottle. black pour with a big tan head that sticks. aroma of chocolate, coffee, cereal, cookies and toffee. malts and light chocolate are well balanced in the taste. creamy full bodied palate. great stuff.

bottle: strong aroma, dark, muddy appearance. Strong oatmeal flavor, some after taste in the finish. Overall not bad, just not my favorite...
