Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a tan head. Sweet aroma, with bread, dough, oats, and coffee. Medium body, smooth, a little thin for a stout. Flavor is way more roasted than the aroma lets on, with notes of coffee, toast, and grass. A great beer, usually my dinner beer of choice.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours a dark brown with a light brown head. The nose is pale with tofee notes. The taste is more vinous than i remember but still with hints of the oats, chockolate and cofee. It has a rather bitter finish. For stouts I prefer a heavyer and thicker palate - this one is too waterish

A smooth oatmeal stout but it lacks the backbone and full bodiedness I would like in a stout. The color was nice and the head was good. It was good and I would go back here but it just didn’t sit on my palate long enough though when it was there it was tasty for a bit.

This dark brown ale poured with a fluffy tan head and an oatmeal aroma. The flavor is chocolate malt with a bready oatmeal presence, a bitter coffee finish and a bit of carbonation.

Always reliable Sam Smith. Pours a black/brown, light tan colored head. Smells of a slightly overcooked oatmeal cookie. Nice roast coffee and chocolatey tones. Just enough carbonation. Warms very well.

Pours a dark brown almost black with a thick creamy head. Aroma is sweet and malty but has some fruity notes. Flavor very sweet and creamy. Very bready in the start but has some fruit tartness in the finish. Full bodied and thick, it sticks the whole way down to a nice bitter finish. A great example of an oatmeal stout that isn’t too overwhelming.

Dark, opaque color. Tastes of roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Also a bit creamy. Flavor sticks to the palate after you drink it (which I do enjoy). It ends a little bitter for and oatmeal stout. Overall and excellent beer, I would encourage everyone to try it.
