Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Pours dark as black coffee with a big creamy head that doesn’t want to quit. Aromas of espresso, brown sugar, and nuts with a hint of dry foliage(!); hops are not terribly assertive here. Bold, dark malts like burnt caramel up front followed by definite toast flavors. Palate is balanced between sweet malts and roasted malt bitterness. Very smooth texture and full body. Long, clean finish. Probably best consumed between 55-60 F.

Very nice beer. I had a bottle of the Imperial stout before this one and it was awesome. This beer pored nicely and smelled nice as well. The taste was very nice. It didn’t have the burnt flavor I expected. Highly recommended for fans of stout.

bottle- nice sharpness to this stout. clean, chocolate flavors, with a decent mouthfeel, but not as silky as I would like given the style and name. Roasted malt present as well. Decent.

bottle thanks to metzlers in denton, tx. pours a black with red hues. beige/brown head that seemed to last forever. the aroma blew me away i hope it will be as good as it smells. the nose had malt, sweet and floral as well. flavor is equally as impressive as the aroma. flavor was caramel, dark roast, hints of coffee. this was a remarkably smooth beer. felt like velvet across the tongue. this one is amazing!!

One of my favorites. Pours black. Smells of oats and chocolate. Tastes of coffee, oats, malt. It’s sweet but balanced. Love it.
