Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottle at Harlow’s in Peterborough. Pours black as night. Oatmeal tan head rises magnificently and gracefully exits by halfway through the glass. Notes of oatmeal, cream, chocolate, some malt, in the aroma. Mouthfeel is top notch. Silky smooth, rich, surprisingly drinkable for such a full beer. Flavor is yeasty, chocolate, oatmeal, cream, vanilla, and a bit of hearty smoked meat. Finishes very smooth, with the mildest of hop bitterness. Really a superb beer, certainly my favorite stout, and the best Sam Smith.

2/1/08 notes: bottle. Pours dark brown. Couldn’t help but compare this to St. Ambroise’s Oatmeal stout. Despite somewhat light mouthfeel, this beer features a very creamy texture that feels amazing on the tongue. Flavor is of roasts, milk, dark chocolate, and maybe oats. Finishes pleasantly smooth and sweet. Some toasted flavors round out this beer. My favorite Sam Smith offering. 6/10/09 update: flavor is bready, milky, vanilla, malty, and with some vinous notes. Oats contribute a touch of sweetness. Palate is smooth, though thin. Still a solid, decently priced offering.

55cl bottle. A pitch black beer with a fine but long lasting tan coloured head. Roasted malt nose with notes of raisins and chocolate. The flavour profile consists of a hearty oat backbone, supplemented by roasted malts, rich chocolate and fruity wine-like tones. Smooth, robust and slightly dry palate texture with a mild bitter finish, partnered by a lasting oatiness. Nicely balanced in all departments; a truly gorgeous stout.

I was anxious to try this dark stout after seeing good review. Nice sweat coffee and roasted grain and chocolate aroma and flavor, but actually was surprising thin to me. Kind of sour along the way without an over pleasant finish, at least for me.

Pours a very dark brown with an off white head. Aroma is of chocolate and cream, very sweet. Flavor is much the same, not too much bitterness to be found but well balanced at the same time. Good sweet stout.

Brewed in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England. Has a vibrant roasted malt aroma backed by complex grainy notes and a tinge of alcohol. When poured it develops a rich creamy tan head with superb brussels lattice and fills out an opaque deep brown (almost black) body. On the sip, it displays an nice blend of oats and hops finishing mildly bitter with a dominant roasted malt flavor. I love the texture of this beer! Light, fluffy, carbonated mouth feel that goes down smooth from start to finish. It reminds me a lot of Guiness but better. This is the first oatmeal stout I’ve ever tried so my opinion may be bias , but this is a damn good beer. This would be a nice addition to a seafood dinner. Rating 3.8

A fantasic stout. The Aroma is of chocolate with light licorice aromas. The color is black and slightly opage, with a big lasting tan head, with plenty of lace. Taste is of oats, chocolate, with a very toasty malt flavor. Texture is creamy and very well rounded.
