Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

35.5 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a redish glare and a slowly collapsing tan head. Mild roasted and smooth malt aroma. Smooth mouthfeel. Acidic roasted malt with a light smoke flavour. Light coffee-ish note too. Light acidic and mild smoke finish.

ABV: 5 % Calories: estimated at 150 C Volume: 12 fl oz bottle Glass: concave pint Purchased at: Circle Liquors Super Saver, Pennington, NJ Price: $2.75 Consumed at: home Impression: A rich, deep dark body with a thick tan head. Impressive for such a widely available beer. Almost impenetrable but has a deep ruby core in bright light. Deep, rich, and full flavor with good long aftertaste. Chocolate, roasted coffee, raisin, plum, and orange peel are evident. A very good example of a well crafted mass produced beer. Good finish and aftertaste. Enjoyable, drinkable, and with depth of flavor throughout. Aroma: 8 out of 10 Visuals: 4 out of 5 Taste: 9 out of 10 Palate: 5 out of 5 Overall: 17 out of 20

Very dark pour. Powerful aroma if you let it warm up a bit. A sweet stout with syrupy molasses notes. Smooth, lingering finish. A great, sessionable beer.

2008 Bottle - Pours a thick black with an off-white head. Aroma is of smoked oats and coffee. Flavour is pleasently bitter and complex, but finishes very clean. I will drink this again, a very respectable stout...

This is a lovely stout. Pitch black with an espresso colored head. Smells sweet with malt, dried prunes, and a hint of espresso. In fact, more than just a hint of espresso. The flavor is espresso, but a tad sweet. Leaves a sweet and sour taste on the palate. I have tasted better espresso, but this is a darned good beer.

Bottle. Pours black with fairly decent tan head. Smells of raisins, coffee, very dark cocoa and burnt oatmeal. Taste is fairly strong and complex. The first thing that hits is the bitter, burnt coffee flavor. This is followed by a sweeter, fruity raisin and brown sugar flavor. The beer finishes with a flavor of burnt oats and malts, which lingers in the mouth and throat. There is also something else in there... nuts perhaps? This is a pretty heavy beer, even though the mouthfeel is fairly smooth. It leaves a thick, burnt oat and dark cocoa flavor in your mouth which is quite tasty and not at all obtrusive. Very rich, strong, smooth, and filling.

Practically black, thin head. Bizarrely, there’s the aroma of mouldy cheese. However, there’s also sweet dark fruits and coffee. The taste starts quite coffee-like, but as you let it sit in the mouth that builds up. And as you swallow, when the vapours rise up into the nose, it gets even stronger. Soft mouthfeel, good full body. The taste has burnt raisins too. Rich and smooth, and very tasty.

Bottle pours dark brown with little tan head. Not much aroma but slight malt. I havent tried many stouts and this has a good clean malt flavor. Really smooth and not what I expected from a dark stout beer. Will buy again.
