Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Dark brown with satisfying head on it. aroma of oats and malt, and the taste explodes with roasted malts, nuts and oats shining through. Finish is nice and the body sits well on the tongue.

Bottle. We tried this one for Sam at Crew in Poughkeepsie. Poured a dark brown with a nice chocolate head. The aroma was dissappointingly weak of roasted oats. The taste was a bit stronger again of roasted oats and brown sugar. It was a nice thick beer.

550ml bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Sticks to the glass quite well. The aroma was a little weak, kinda smelled like Guiness, but roasty and malty nonetheless. Not a big fan of stouts (don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE imperial stouts, but thats a different league) although I really like how they look, this one is no exception. Flavor is malty, roasted and tastes like plain oatmeal with a small amount of melted chocolate mixed in with it. I really like the mouthfeel on this one, and it is quite refreshing. Again, not a huge stout fan, but this one is probably my favorite thus far.

bottle. Pours nice and dark, thick tan head. Aroma is all malty sweetness. Roasted malt/oatmeal/sweet flavor, smooth and syrupy, but not sticky.

Pours with a big, rocky, light brown head covering a black body. Sweeet honey and chocolate malt aroma with some oatmeel too. Sweet, grainey taste with chocolate. Syrupy mouthfeel.

Bottled. Sweet, musty, nutty aroma. Red-black body, light-brown head. Taste full, very silky palate. Mammi, sweet roasted coffee, long chocolatey finish.

12 ounce bottle- pours out a promising mahogany brown with a huge cola-colored head. Aroma was somewhat chocolate and malt. Taste was a little disappointing. Watery and weaker than expected, the creamy texture found in most stouts is missing here, thin bodied. Maybe a good choice to introduce as someone’s first stout. Needs some work.
