Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

12 ounce bottle- pours out a promising mahogany brown with a huge cola-colored head. Aroma was somewhat chocolate and malt. Taste was a little disappointing. Watery and weaker than expected, the creamy texture found in most stouts is missing here, thin bodied. Maybe a good choice to introduce as someone’s first stout. Needs some work.

wow..this is a beer that I grew up on...and still love....a great roasted malt flavor and super creamy mouthfeel.....great stuff....why can’t all oatmeal stouts be this good?

1 finger tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, and some caramel. No hint of alcohol in flavor, roasted malt flavor. Some mild hops, medium bodied. Liked this slightly better than the imperial stout.

Pours dark but kinda thin with nice finely bubbled head that disappears kind of quickly. Smells of chocolate and caramel predominate. Taste smooth, clean, crisp with excellent and refreshing balance of sweet malts, chocolate, and coffee. Finishes light with me wanting more.

This is a very smooth, eeasy drinking stout. It does have a very slight taste of oatmeal, not very sweet and very litttle bitterness.

Looks and tastes like a stout should. Plenty of complexity here, noting especially chocolate, smoke, roast malt, and of course, an oatmealy finish.

This is a good stout. Even during my times when I did not like stouts I still liked this one. Black in color with a very thin tan head. You could certainly taste a hint of oatmeal and chocolate with some malts in the flavor. Very smooth and easy to drink. Finish is slightly bitter. Warming with a chocolate and oatmeal aftertaste. Very good."

Pours a frothy tan head. The smoothest tasting beer I’ve ever tried. The taste is of choclate malts and a slight smoked flavor. It’s a little sweeter than expected, but one of the better beers I have tried. I was expecting a bit more alchohol, but still a good catch. Not much of a ’wow’ bottle of beer, but definately is a good try and addtion for anyone wanting to try a new beer.
