Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Reddish brown in color. Thick tan head that retains itself well and leaves some nice lacing. Aroma is very very roasty with notes of coffee and nuts. There’s also some sweet chocolate. Taste is similarly roasty. Lots of coffee with a little fruitiness. Very malt-dominated and chewy. Hard to tell if the mild bitterness in the finish is from hops or roasted malt. Mouthfeel is extremely creamy and velvety, but with enough warmth becomes a bit watery. A very tasty oatmeal stout, and one of SS’s best beers.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a thin, beige head. Aromas of raisins, and coffee. Big coffee and caramel flavors and, oddly enough, apples. Medium-thin on the palate. Good beer and if any stout is sessionable, this one is.

Dark brown in color with a good head. Aroma has a little roastiness, toastiness, malts. Taste has a good flavor with slight chocolate and the oats. Medium body. Smooth and creamy.

(bottle thanks OSLO) Pours dark brown with a tan head that lasts. Aroma is light berry, with some cocoa, toasted nut, and roasted malt. Taste is pretty sweet with chocolate and a very light taste of roasted malt on the finish. Pretty thin beer, and the flavors are pretty subdued.

[Bottle] Pours dark brown with a decent tan head. Aroma is cocoa, toasty malt, rather subdued. Taste is quite sweet up front, something metallic and the toasted malt again. Finish is rather unpleasant--lightly bitter and metallic. A little thin, but it is smooth. Very drinkable, but fairly average and a little sweet for me.

Very dark, creamy flavor with a good malt flavor. A hint of chocolate in there as well, definately can taste the oat flavor. Very good, not as good as the imperial stout

This is one of my favorite beers dark and creamy with a bttersweet taste.A toasted malt flavor with a creamy head that has a off white color.

Pours deep chocolate with substantial caramel head that clings to glass. Smells of sweet caramel with oats and some nuttiness. Delightfully light, not as creamy as I anticipated. As close to perfect for my palate as possible. Delicate balance of sweetness and bitterness. This one goes down all too smoothly.
