Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Jet black pour with 1-inch thick tan head. Aroma is assertive like rubbing alcohol, roasted barley, oats. Smooth texture with a medium body. Begins with malt sweetness - molasses, caramel and chocolate, chewy toffee - and continues into a balancing hop spice bitterness, though subtle. Finishes on a cadence of dry and bittersweet coffee flavor. Malted barley combined with oatmeal and more roasted barley add a nice nuance to this beer which separates it from the average stout. Slick palate and a somewhat abrupt finish.

A devilishly dark and complex beer. One of my favorite stouts -- and one that stands tall among any beer in the category.

Had about 10 beer drinkers do a taste test of about 15-20 dark beers from all over the world. This one came out on top by a landslide. Great beer!!!

Bottle. Poured black in color with a nice foamy thick long lasting tanned head. The aroma was that of molasses, dark fruit and chocolate malts with a hint of coffee. Medium body with sweet malt, dark fruits (cherry) flavor in the beginning, followed by coffee bitterness and some chocolate. Finish is short but well balanced. Great Stout.

Bottle. Poured almost black in color with a nice brown head that lasted throughout the beer. the aroma was that of coffee and chocolate malts with a hint of oats and sweetness. The mouthfeel was heavy and smooth. It tasted of coffee with a toffee overtone slightly bitter. Over all a great stout .

Slight roasted oat aroma, not overpowering. Opaque black body with a large tan head. Slightly bitter taste because of the coffee overtones. Medium body with a long chocolate and coffee aftertaste. Decent stout, not bad, not great.

Classy label on this one. It poured a dark and clear colour, with a most active creamy head, light brown in hue. The aroma was subtle, with hints of chocolate and maybe a pinch of malt. The taste was rather more definite, certainly a healthy amount of coffee at the forefront, perhaps some chocolate lurking behind.
