Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

12 oz. bottle. Pours pitch black with a creamy, light tan head. Roasted malt, a little wood and some soy sauce make up a relatively light nose. Nothing truly spectacular so far. Medium carbonation with a medium-light mouthfeel. Nice roasty character, light earth notes, some wood, and soy sauce make up the palate. Nice, smooth mouthfeel. Finish is medium with some lingering roasted and wood notes. Overall a stalwart example of a stout that is enjoyable just about any time.

Bottle from a pizzeria in west philadelphia. I am genuinely surprised to see the high ratings on here - I usually rate on the low side, but not like this! Pours like hot maple syrup. Tastes like cold maple syrup (e.g. 1000% too sweet). Smells like a bad cup of coffee. Finish reminiscent of oatmeal that was cooked along with a bar of soap. Either I got a bad bottle, have gone quite mad, or something seriously weird is going on.

Bottle at the Chandos, London. Sweet gentle roast malts with a hint of liquorice and toffee. Plenty of fresh tasting english hops in the finish. Good mature natural tasting carbonation and attractive lacing. Classy beer.

Bottle: Pours very dark brown with a ruby red hue. Large light brown head eventually disappears. Not an overly powerful aroma, but you can pick up some chocolate, cream, oats and sweet fruit. Very smooth tasting. Nice chocolate malty taste with hints of raisin. Bitter cocoa finish. Not a heavy stout but its not lacking in body. Dry, creamy texture. Not too sweet, not too bitter.

Pours a very nice dark brown color. Smells of oatmeal, almost raisin. Complex taste, with coffee, chocolate, malts and other grains, smooth and enjoyable.
