Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Sweeter than normal, I like it! A slight metalic taste, but I'm thinking that was just this bottle.

Clear dark red color, fluffy tan head. Malty, sweet, raissin, chocolate scent. Sweet, dry, bready, cocoa taste. Smooth mouthfeel, low bitterness.

2004 bottle at the Downtown Liquors stouts tasting. Tasting this alongside some rather unspectacular, but good stouts (Gritty’s black fly, Guinness Extra, Avery Out of Bounds, Dorothy Goodbody’s, NC Old No. 38) and two very good stouts (Shakespeare and Freeminer Deepshaft), it is pretty recognizable, to me, anyways, how simple and boring this beer is. To its credit, it does taste flavorful, with a bit of molasses mixed in with light chocolate and sweet residual sugar. But there is no yeast presence, no thick, chewy, interesting body. Fizzy head and a clear body due to huge filtration and forced carbonation. Why did I love this stuff for so long???

Great beige head and awesome pitch black color. I cant believe this was so good despite the clear bottle. Sweet and roasty flavor and extremely smooth. The best oatmeal stout hands down.

355ml bottle (Kaisla, Helsinki)
Practically black, thin head. Bizarrely, there’s the aroma of mouldy cheese. However, there’s also sweet dark fruits and coffee. The taste starts quite coffee-like, but as you let it sit in the mouth that builds up. And as you swallow, when the vapours rise up into the nose, it gets even stronger. Soft mouthfeel, good full body. The taste has burnt raisins too. Rich and smooth, and very tasty.

(Bottle) Pours a nice rocky beige head with a opaque black body. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Tastes malt and strong cocoa and finishes incredibly smooth and milky. Absolutely lovely, darling!

Had on tap at the Three Goats Heads, Oxford, 07-04-06. Pours dark, dark brown, creamy slightly dirty head, tastes very smooth, smokey coffee chocolatey taste that is really pleasant. Really enjoyed this.

Black colour with a nice lacing and medium lasting head. Fruity aroma with hints of roasted coffee and caramel. Nice full body.
