Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Bottled. Black with a brown head. A smoked, burnt and malty aroma. Soft, smooth and salty. Burnt flavour with an ok bitterness.

Dark, almost black, with a nice brownish head. Aroma is malty, nutty and creamy, with chocolate and cocoa. Flavr is malty and well, and the nutty and creamy touches are there. Some vanilla, some milk. I like this brewery.

Bottled. Dark brown. Smokey aroma up front, almost covering the nutty cocoa notes. Very smooth and porous mouthfeel. Finishes with a medium bitterness.

550 ml bottle poured a clear, dark brownish black with a lasting beige head. Aromas of dark fruit, molasses, licorice and a hint of coffee. Palate was light, crisp and smooth. Flavors of coffee, roasted malt, and bitter chocolate with a smooth, lingering mildly bitter finish.

Bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours ruby-black with a large rocky light-brown head. Looks perfect. The aroma is a wonderful complex mix of caramel, oatmeal, chocolate, fruit, roasted malt, spices, spruce, toffee and much more. The flavour contains the ingredients of the aroma and is sweet with a balanced bitterness in the finish. A delicious, creamy, sweet stout and one of my favourite beers.

What an awsome brew! Dark chocoalte in color with a tall, frothy, tan head that mostly stays with you until the beer is gone. Aroma is of caramel and malt with a dark semi-sweet chocolate and lingering oat nose. Flavor starts out with sweet chocolate and mocha with oats in the background and then finishes bittersweet. Palate is dark yet creamy, very smooth, velvety. The lacing hangs out just above the beer line.

Definitely one of the best beers in the world. The oatmeal finish is so creamy. A meal in itself.
