Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Wonderful stout! Black with a reddish tint/hue. Tastes like some bittersweet chocolate with maybe molasses or coffee in it. Recommended with a creamy or chocolate dessert.

Very thick head produced when the beer is poured. The beer is a very smooth drink, with a cocoa and malty aroma, and a coffee and bitter flavour. The beer is only let down by a slightly sweet tang after the beer is swallowed. A great beer nonetheless.

Re rate: Ordered at a pizza restaurant because they had it listed as 'Sam Adams' Oatmeal (not heard of that) - oh well - still the same - Smooth, choclatey after taste, nice thick creamy head. Definitely one of the better stouts I have tasted - especially one so easily obtainable. Noticed the sweet aroma as well. Same score.

Bottled(550ml). -this is one of the best beers that i’ve tried in last six months, deep dark coloured, airy pale brown head, chocolate cake and sherry nose, fruity(cherry) and roasted flavor, roasted malty and roasted coffee aroma with nice strong dark chocolate notes, slight bitterness, nice moderate bitter-sweet finish

Dark brown with a beige head. An intriguing aroma of chocolate and some fruit I can’t name. Possibly redcurrant. The taste has liquorice, alcohol, coffee, black treacle sweetness. Combined with only slight bitterness this makes a stout that it would be hard for anyone not to enjoy.

Bottle. Poured a dark black color with some red around the edges. Head was tan and creamy, but didn’t leave a lot of lace behind. Pleasant aroma of vanilla ice cream and milk chocolate. Slightly sweet up front with raisin, milk chocolate and molasses flavors. Finishes dry and a bit roasty.

Dark black color, medium brown head. Smoked aroma of roasted malts, salami, rye and bread. Taste is more sweet, obvious candy sugar, bit fruity. Finish of sugarwater, dry palate.

(To celebrate my 30th anniversary, in Munich) Black colored, medium sized beige head. Strong aroma with roastiness, sweet caramel and some berries, indeed excellent aroma. Medium bodied. Flavor is also excellent with this same sweet caramelly roastiness, mild licorice and berries come also nicely up. Aftertaste is still sweet. Fine way for spending your birthday!
