Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

This is a really solid stout, one of the smoothest and best malt profiles I can remember. For only being 5% the weight on the palate and malt depth is very impressive. Soft burnt characters, dark chocolate, that oatmeal smoothness you get. Subtle dark cherry comes through as it warms.

Bottle. Dark brown with a big, light brown head that seemed somewhat unstable. Big chocolate aroma combines with dough and earth. Malty flavours with hints of bitter-sweet chocolate, coffee and some tart fruit. Medium body, quite soft. A classic

Texture douce. (Rating #32)

Big-bubbled, sudzy, tan head; dark brown in color. Smooth, milky texture with very mild carbonation. Roasted coffee, chocolate, and hints of subtle fruit. Lactic with a corn syrup sweetness. Yeasty, "wet rag" notes. Very mild bitterness.

550. Pours a deep black, essentially opaque, with a thick, moussy tan head. Plenty of clingy, webby lace. Big chocolate and oats nose--it’s the original cookie-smellin’ beer without a doubt. The attack is restrained in a diginified way, but not to the point of anonymity. Medium body, very light carb, subdued chocolate flavor. The mid palate wakes up a bit with that nutty, oaty flavor, chocolate, and maybe a bit of chalk at the end. Clingy sweet finish, though not very pronounced. Everything about this beer is polite, especially by stout standards, but it’s complex and satisfying and, maybe best of all, it’s light enough to drink all day. Great stuff. Ya gotta respect your forebears, especially when they make it this easy.

Black-brown, tall tan head. Chocolatey and charred toast aromas. Big roasted malt flavours, coffee, chocolate, black cherry hints. Rich and creamy mouthfeel, rounded balanced palate. A fantastic stout from a brewer that has yet to disappoint.

Poured out opaque with a tall brown head. Aroma is light with hints of the highly roasted malts awaiting in the flavor. Yum! Some sweet molasses cut with some dryer tasting roasted chocolate malts. Thick and creamy mouth feel. This is very tasty. If I nitpick I’d say it could use a bit more aroma, a bit more gravity and body. Good beer.

An Oatmeal raisin cookie recipe in a bottle. I love this stuff, and would be more than happy to drink it all the time. Has the appearance of a coffee liquer, with a bit of a malty coffee taste, but smooth right up till the end.
