Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? It’s sammy smith’s oatmeal stout. If you don’t know it, get to know it. You won’t be disappointed.

(Bottled 20 Apr 2006) Colour is dark brown, almost black, with ruby hints. Firm, beige head. Nose is mildly roasted, with chocolate, some sweetness and tobacco. Full taste of roasted oatmeal and chocolate. Bitter-sweet with some hops in the finish. Very smooth and nice.

Even though this beer claims a 5% alcohol content it tasts like 10% which means this one delivers a real kick from the first swallow. A very sweet stout with as much taste as anyone can handle.

Re-Rate 10/13/02: The beer pours a full bodied black color, the generous head is chocolate brown, the lace lays in sheets upon the “Chimay Goblet” I drink it from, as I think goblets and chalices do more for stouts than the traditional “Guinness” tulip glasses. When you bring this to your lips for the first taste, the roasted malt, oats, caramel, and an almost molasses like tone greets you. Front is malt sweet; the middle is full, rich, creamy and somewhat chocolate like, the finish is where you find the Kent hops at the semi-sweet dry finish, and a long lasting toasted grain after taste. Stouts are not meant for everyone, as much as I love them, many will find them bitter, overpowering and totally lacking in merit, but then I feel that way about most Lagers/Pilsners, but to me this is what makes beer and beer drinkers so interesting, the difference in taste and opinions.

I laughed, I cried, I wished that I had bought another. A well-balanced sweet stout. Pitch black, aromatic and mouthy. Never met a Sam Smith’s that I didn’t like. PS. DO NOT DRINK WITH FISH. It really brings out the iodine in fish, and messes up really good trout and really good stout.

Highly drinkable for a stout beer. Distinct roasty flavors of coffee, chocolate. Slight sweetness on palate, with a short lingering dryness in the finish. Highly satisfying and recommended.

Bottled. This was I think the first good beer I ever bought after finding Ratebeer and deciding I was going to start rating. It was also the last beer I drank before I began rating. And it has been 5 years and 2600 ratings before I have revisited it.

I remember thinking it was incredibly sweet at the time, and the flavor was very different to me. I see that sweetness now, but it is way more mellow than I perceived, with most of the character being chiefly lactic. There is a little bit of roast and grain in there, with a slightly carbonic, oaty note. I’m not sure how crazy I was about this at the time, and I know I’m not crazy about it now, although to me it is still one of the only truly sweet "sweet stouts" I’ve yet drank. Very few oatmeal stouts dare approach this level of sweetness that is not just a byproduct of underattenuation.

What a beautiful and delicious stout! Nice dark brown color with a red glow. The head is tall, creamy with a inviting tan color! The aroma is probably the most delicious about this beer: Roasted malt, fruit, apple, chocolate, coffee... I could go on and on! Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, nut with a nice bitter finish. Only minus about this beer in my opinion is too much carbonation. But man, this stuff is delicious!! My new favorite stout!
