Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

[578-20070904] 500mL. Plum boozy raisin aroma with brandied Christmas cake. Very dark brown body with a long-lasting foamy light tan head. Roasted malty dark fruit fig pudding flavours. Full body is smooth. Flavour pulls all together nicely.

Bottle in the Cittie of York, London. Near black in colour with a decent tan head that left plenty of lacing. Sweet chocolate aroma with some roasted notes. Light mouth feel with plenty of chocolate and roasted malt flavour and a slightly dry finish. Very good.

Forgot to rate this. Tasted in February as part of LCBO’s winter release. Bottle. Poured a deep black colour, very creamy looking off white head. Expected roasted and coffee aroma. Very silky smooth mouthfeel, appropriate bitterness at the end. The whole product is well balanced and comes together well - a great stout.

Bottle: Excellent aroma. Very sweet and malty. Lots of chocolate, fruit, and coffee. Pours a dark brown, virtually black, with a tan head that dies fairly quickly. Rather sweet. Fruity chocolate is the dominant flavor. Light oatmeal in the background. Coffee comes in the finish but for the most part is drowned out by the fruits and chocolate. A little thin for a stout.

Appearance: Pours an opaque black body with a small, creamy, light yellowish head. Smell: Sweetish, malty aroma with hints of milk-soaked, cinnamon-sugar coated bread crusts and red wine. Taste: The flavor is predominately sweet with flavors of chocolate, coffee, and molasses. There’s also a slight roasty balancing bitterness, though it still manages to finish semi-sweet as the chocolate emerges once more. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body with a soft carbonation, but its silky smooth, I must say! Drinkability: A nice, light, sweet stout fit for any time of day, including 8:30 in the morning!

Popped the top and poured at arms-length because of the table and I was lazy. Man, could smell it quite easily. Lots of sweet chocolate, sweetened condensed milk, oatmeal, also smells of smoked wood. Also, some similarities in the aroma to Traquair beers. But, there’s a light soapyness. The beer has a nice dark garnet transparent body with a tall frothy tan head. Nice lacing. The flavor is nicely sweet, chocolate oatmeal brownies, has some nice spicyness in the hops and raw quality sugars too. Perhaps a light fennel seed. The palate is initally slick and watery, but it seems like a light airy mousse and has a nice licorice lingering taste. Quite refreshing.

Dark, rich color and good head retention. A malty aroma. Great dark roast flavor - pleasantly burnt. Hints of alcohol and malt flavor. Smooth palate and pleasant finish. Great stout.
