Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Sweet aroma, beautiful black color. It does have a small coffee flavor, but not so much that it really tastes like coffee at all, which would make it bad. A tantalizing flavor that leaves you wanting more. This uncomplete finish is it’s only drawback.

Sour milk in the nose. Dark black color and a huge foamy head. Root beer-like taste with coffee tones, also a little butteryness. Medium bodied. Good stuff.

Sweet beer courtesy of the oatmeal, a great dark colour that looks great, and a full-bodied taste that makes it an all-around great beer!

Deep brown/black with gorgeous ruby flashes when held up to the light, and a soft mocha head. Aromas of bitter chocolate, sweeted coffee and roasted oats. Silky, creamy mouthfeel. Sweet chocolate malted flavour, with a perfectly balanced bitterness in the finish. Mmmmmmm!

Black as night on the pour and a nice beautiful tan head. The nose is malt and a little sweetness.. Oatmeal... Sweet, creamy and smooth. some chocolate. a great stout and fantastic on the palate not too thick but just right. Bitter at the end as I’ve come to expect from England. Coffee flavor throughout.. Yummy!!

550ml clear bottle: Pours a dark ruby brown with a thin tan head, aroma has rich dark fruity malts, thin bodied with light carbonation, with an odd fruity ending. Put it in BROWN bottles!!!!!

Bottle (BBE Dec 06). Cola, roast and smoke aromas. Thin with seemingly unfermented sugar feel. Poor.

An opaque dark brown color, just about black. It is topped by a frothy, creamy brown head. Thick malty aromas mixed with burnt toast, expresso, toffee, and chocolate are all found in the nose. The taste is sweet, creamy, chocolately, and slightly viscous. I get notes of milk chocolate, and espresso. There is a bitter component that is derived from the roasted malt, but it is not enough to balance the sweetness that is found in this beer. For some reason I was expecting a bit more out of this beer. It is quite decent but seems a little dumbed down, which makes sense given this beer wide availibility & popularity.
