Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

An opaque dark brown color, just about black. It is topped by a frothy, creamy brown head. Thick malty aromas mixed with burnt toast, expresso, toffee, and chocolate are all found in the nose. The taste is sweet, creamy, chocolately, and slightly viscous. I get notes of milk chocolate, and espresso. There is a bitter component that is derived from the roasted malt, but it is not enough to balance the sweetness that is found in this beer. For some reason I was expecting a bit more out of this beer. It is quite decent but seems a little dumbed down, which makes sense given this beer wide availibility & popularity.

I’ve only had this one in the bottle, but it was quite delicious. A fine example of what a good oatmeal stout should taste like.

Bottle (BBE Dec 06). Cola, roast and smoke aromas. Thin with seemingly unfermented sugar feel. Poor.

black pour with a creamy tan head. Creamy texture and a bit sweet with a nice roasted malt and slightly bitter finish. The beer feels more like a black lager to me than a Stout. Lots of roasted malt in the nose and toungue. Very light textured though for a stout. A great beer for a dark beer lover!

Bottle. This one excites me. Still got to finish the Arrogant Bastard, cleanse the palate and pour this one. Be back in a minute... OK, I’m back. Pours black with a massive brown head. Almost a bourbonesque aroma. Light taste for a stout. Very smoky taste. The oatmeal comes through. I don’t like smoky beer (always makes me feel like I’m drinking barbecue sauce), so this is actually a bit of a disappointment. Sad.
